I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to decode the tag on your rear end. I want to make sure the rear is the correct one for my car.

Thanks!!

The tag will pretty much tell you what gearset is in there. For example if it has 3.08s in it, you will find 3 and 08 on the tag. They may be seperated a little bit, but will be on there.

It will also tell you the axle plant that built it, the differential type ("open" or "limited slip"), the ring gear diameter, and the build date.

Post the data here and we'll decode it.

It may also say something like 3L08 the L means locking rear end and the 3 and 08 mean 3.08 gear ratio.

The tag on the rear says the following:
5217A
3l08 88 1A28

If possible, can someone decode that for me? Does this rear belong in my 91 LX?

Thanks!!

S217A = axle model plant code, S = Sterling axle plant
3L08 = 3.08:1 gearset with limited slip (Traction Lok) differential
88 = 8.8" ring gear diameter
1A28 = January 28, 1991 build date

Thank you very much!! It is the correct rear then. How did you get that info. Can you tell me where I can get it?

Thanks!!
