Rear sway bar broke...

1945 Views 13 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  ccs94gt
Somehow, my rear sway bar broke a couple weeks back. A guy in Tulsa is going to sell me one from a FOX body for $20.

My question is, should I go ahead and buy this and use it or should I just go without a sway bar?

Are there any traction advantages in not using one on the rear? I've heard that taking out the front sway bar can help improve traction at the drag strip, but what about the rear?

No you can not run without a rear swaybar......:nono:

Bad things will happen if you try it.........
our cars use the same setup as gm A and G bodys, a triangulated 4 bar. the sway bar in the rear helps plant both tires on launch. i used one from a grand national on my malibu wagon and it made a world of difference. launches much straighter and hits both tires harder.
I just can't remember if those years are interchangeable or not...

I would think if the mounting holes are the same, it should work but I can't remember if the width would be the same.
I was told that the FOX and SN95 rear sway bars are different, but ARE interchangeable.

I was also told the FOX sway bar isn't as prone to breaking as the SN95...

I have money to replace it, but I'd have to dip into the "Engine fund" to do so. So this kinda sucks. Never heard of anyone breaking their rear sway bar before. I'm sure it's happened to plenty of people, this was just completely unexpected.

The good news is that that's all is wrong. When I first heard it clunking around back there, I was scared to death something went wrong with the gear swap. So thank God it's just the sway bar I guess.

What is the worst case scenario with driving without the sway bar?
Uh....you'll sway??? :winks

Sorry, couldn't resist......

Good question though. I've never had that happen to me.
How/when did it break? Were you doing hard launches or just normal driving?
My guess would be a warped axle housing.

Don't say it..... :scared

I have NO idea how it happened. I was just driving and heard an awful clunking noise every time I hit a bump.

Sounded so bad I thought I was about to throw an axle out the side of my car! Drove straight to the shop, jacked it up and was looking all over. I couldn't see what was going on, so I had my dad hit the tire and I followed the clunking sound to the passenger side. Right where the sway bar mounts to the axle is where it broke. It's actually a pretty clean break.
But how it broke, I have NO clue...
Hmmmm....my F150 does that and I could never figure out what it is. Its not as bad as you're describing, but I wonder.........
Just weld it back together. :smartass:
it will be ok to drive it untill you get one. think about all the mustangs that do not have one to begin with!

Exactly what I was thinking about...
You can drive without one just fine, it just sucks compared to having the sway bar.

No joke man, I did this 9 years ago and its still holding... It really shouldn't affect anything.
