Running on 4 cyl after overheat.

So today while driving home to the family for thanksgiving, the lower radiator hose popped off, dumped the entire system, and overheat the engine. As soon as that needle started going up I babied the engine as soft as I could, pulled off the nearest exit, and parked. The engine died right at 40 mph, before it died there was severe knocking, no abnormal shaking, no smell. I opened up the hood and very little white smoke was coming up from BOTH sides of the engine, at first I thought I had ate up the valve cover gaskets, which was not the case. After putting the hose (which was in great condition) back onto the radiator, I filled it up with fluid (one gallon of 50/50 green, the rest water. I'm broke as all get out.) I realized that my radiator cap was not working, so off to the store to buy a new one. Now the coolant system is fixed and works fine again, the engine is not firing 2 cyl. The engine shakes like an earthquake at idle, there is a light spinning sound when accelerating, that's the best i can describe it, and it sounds just like my buddies 4 cyl Foxbody. I may upload a video if I get too many "huh's?" Also, upon removing the oil cap on the valve cover, a nice white smoke slowly rises out. It smells like just burnt, nothing but burnt. It doesn't smell like oil though, oddly enough. The engine did drive another 100 miles like this though, with no fuss at all. So I am absolutely stumped, We definitely didn't cover this in engines.

Sounds like some bad stuff happened.

Probably blew a head gasket or maybe both, and its possible there is engine damage.

That's what I'm thinking. At worst I think I may have blown out a piston entirely. I do know that no gasket has blown, and there are no external cracks in the crankcase. I could have jammed an exhaust valve open, causing a no compression scenario in one of the cylinders. Either way, it's not going to be a cheap fix. Luckily I've been working on a complete engine/transmission swap for 6 months now, Looks like it will just be a little sooner than I had anticipated. It does however run without making a fuss, so driving the short trip to and from work is still viable. I may just do a rebuild this next week to help it out.
Update: burnt out two spark plugs, replaced all plugs, checked wires and coil pack, greased wires, the earthquake is gone, it idles and runs like a v6 firing on all cylinders, in neutral. Once I put it in drive the engine dies. I fear that I'm losing compression somewhere and that it's time for a new engine. As a first semester college student about to join the Army, I don't the time nor can I afford a new engine.
95% if it gets hot enough to shut itself off its a headgasket.
compression check time!
Yet another update: It's now running like a champ. The idle motor is definitely in need of replace, but it's not dead yet. Pulled off 0-60 in 5 seconds yesterday after buying food for the week, so it's back to a v6. (spark plugs were the culprit) Now i'm just worried about how long this good behavior will last.

Ummmmmm... how did you time that? 5 seconds is damn fast for a v6 unless there's something I don't know :headscratch:
if it runs, leave it if theres nothing in the oil that would suggest leakage. garanteed there is plenty of damage fro mexcessive expansion of metal, washing some none firing walls with gas and so on. if it were mine id rebuild or sell. since your leaving id change the oil to get the **** out, run some lucas oil stabilizer and leave it.

these damned engines seem to be bulletproof. unfortunately they traded power for that.
