I have a 66 GT coupe with a 289, headers and cam. I haven't driven it much lately but I drive it daily from my warehouse to the parking lot. I noticed that when I rev it, I get what seems like alot of water (rusty) out of one side of the exhaust tailpipe and a minimal amount from the other side. I originally thought maybe it was condensation gathering in the exhaust pipe from starting it daily but not driving it. Now I am starting to wonder if there could be a different problem. There is no water in the oil, and the motor sounds fine. Could it be a cracked head? Bad head gasket? How can I find out?
Engine has new anti-freeze, water in radiator doesn't look rusty, water from tail pipe is rusty and seems to be just water, not anti-freeze.
Thanks

Its probably caused because it sat warm and the "nose" was not blown beforehand. Your mufflers are probably rusting due to the lack of being stainless. My exhaust person said 30 minutes of idle and several hard revs or 3 miles to blow out all the condensation in the pipes. Keep us posted.

Hello hockman5,
The mind has a funny way of making us think the worse.

I really think you have a rusting exhaust - -but you could do a few things to check. I would also like to mention - (back in the day when I was young) I would drill a small weep hole in each muffler in the end. Just a small hole about an 1/8 inch nit

Now to try and ease your mind - you could de 2 tests that will
prove the condition of the motor
1. - Is a pressure test on the cooling system. Basically they attach
a special gauge to the radiator neck and then pump in pressure.
The gauge will tell you if there is a leak

The second test is a compression test. ANother simple test and you can borrow a compression tester from places like Auto-zone.
Simple to use and will tell you a lot about the condition of things

I think both tools can be borrowed (basically you rent the tool, leave a deposit and then when you return the tool they refund the FULL deposit

I have a strong feeling you are over thinking things and that is understandable

All the above. Short runs of less than 25 miles do not allow engine to burn off condensation buildup. It will also show up as a milky deposit around oil filler cap. Any vehicle will blow condensation from tailpipe when first started for a short time. If shut down, that moisture rusts the muffler and pipes.

ok I feel a little better. I will take a nice drive today and see if the symptoms disappear, if not, I will pressure test and compression test. Thanks!!!
