Sat Radio/GPS Antenna Placement for NAV units?

9782 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  hawgman
I did some searching around and wasnt able to find any pictures that showed where people's XM/Sirius/GPS antennas are put when swapping out the Shaker radio for a NAV Head Unit. I was thinking either the Pioneer AVIC-D1 or Eclipse AVN5435 and in both cases I was wondering where people put their GPS or Sat Radio antennas. Any help would be great help. Obviously a stealth install is what the goal is, as with my wife's Nissan you can hide the Sat. Radio antenna inside the rear brake light cavity, the signal is fine and noone knows you have SAT.

Thanks

Did you do a search on here? I recall someone put the antenna in the A-pillar...??
I'll post pics in a few hours, but I have my GPS antenna mounted in the center of the dash, right up against the windshield. It has a 2" x 2" heatproof mounting panel under it, so the air vents won't blow direcly on it (not that those air vents actually blow any air to the windshield anyway!). My Sirius antenna is actually mounted to the inside top of the rear window in the center. The installer experimented with a few locations, but that one was the most stealth. I have great reception 95% of the time, so I'm satisfied with it there, and you have to be in the back seat to see it, since it is blocked by the black border on the window.

The first pic is the GPS antenna on the dash. The second pic is the Sirius antenna viewed from the back seat looking up at the headliner. The antenna is designed to be placed on the roof, so it was taken apart and the insides were flipped upside down, so that when mounted upside down, the antenna inside would face up.

That 2" x 2" square under the GPS antenna is magnetic and it holds the antenna pretty well, but the guys at the carwash always seemed to knock it off when they clean the windshield, so i got some double sided picture mounting tape (the thin white strip visible in the pic) and stuck it there. It is on pretty solid, in fact i didn't line it up exactly but i couldn't peel it off cause it was on so strong!
I guess I took the lazy way out. Put a small piece of velcro on the bottom of each antenna ( I have both GPS and Sirius ) and have them in the back deck.
