Its kind of disappointing to see a small 4 banger can beat you on take off! I have a 1965 coupe 289 auto. How can I increase the shift RPM? I feel like the car is shifting okay for city driving but not when you want to punch it.

Try swapping out your gears, for a set of 4.10's or 4.30's. Also your valve train and internals. After you're done with that, swap out your cam for a cam that has a power range between 2500 and 8000 RPM's if you want to get serious, Mike. :bigthumbsup:bigthumbsup

I think it's all about, torque, traction, and weight. Does your car hesitate when you punch it? A stock car should have most of its torque at the bottom end, up to about 3200 rpm. If you couldn't catch the car, then you don't have enough HP. The stock cam is very poor for performance. A 4B carb and intake is one of the cheapest and easiest upgrades, a good dual exhaust that is not restrictive will help also. Post more info on your car and engine. Good Luck.

From a standing start your engine doesn't produce much torque or any hp to speak of. You need to get your RPM higher for that to kick in.
A higher stall converter will work wonders to get you into the torque band - with a stock engine use about a 2500 rpm stall.
The next step would be gears - get some new gears for the rear end and install them. I would recommend 3.5 - 3.8 gears for a stock street car. You are likely to have some traction problems when you do this. You wil need fatter, softer tires and get a set of Cal-Traks and install them.
You will be amazed at the acceleration you have from a standing start. Then you will notice that your C4 is not shifting like you need it to and a good TransGo reprogramming kit will fix that.

I had to research all your points. Did not know about any of them!
Can any mechanic do these or do they have to be performance savvy? I have my car at the Mustang shop but they are just taking for ever to do some work for me.

Or you could just manually shift thru the gears at whatever rpm you want. If it's fine for daily driving leave it. If your going to race, build it for that.

The car is in the Mustang shop right now so I don't have access to it. I spoke to the manager there and asked about the Stall Converter. He was on the opinion that will make the car run hotter. Is he correct?
