I have the GT50 5.0L engine with the cast cobra intake.

I tried installing (for the looks) a GT40 Tubular upper intake and was told it should just bolt right on..simple R/R .......BUT..the bolt holes don't line up...

the cast cobra intake has a 2-1/2" centers mounting holes and the GT40 tubular intake has 3" center holes.....

so do I need the GT40 lower intake too, and will it fit?

If so, can I just move over my fuel rails stc. from the GT50 lower or do I have to source all new stuff?

will this lower work on my GT50 302? any mods needed?

can I source any GT40 lower intake from a Explorer for example??

no such thing as GT50,whatever you're trying to say..maybe you meant to type GT40

the tubular upper you have may be from a 351w GT40 intake

if so,then its useless for your 302 GT40 intake,it obviously doesnt fit your 302 gt40 lower, and if you were to get a 351w GT40 lower to go with this upper, the 351w lower intakes are wider and wont fit a 302

thanks... for the quick and informative reply...

UGH!!! that might explain everything... ( yes I have the stock cast gt 40 intake, circa 1990) --sorry)

So there are two diff. sets of upper tubular intakes, for a 351 ( with 3" on center mounting holes) and then a 302 tubular ( with 2-1/2" on center mounting holes....)

so..... if I get a 302 intake it should bolt right on...

Do I have this right...

if indeed you do have the 351w tubular upper, then it is totally useless to you and your 302

if you get a 302 tubular upper,it WILL bolt right on to your cobra 302 lower

there are two different upper/lower intake combos..both look very similar..one upper/lower combo is for a 351w--wider

the other upper/lower combo is for a 302 you obviously have to have the correct matching upper/lower combo for the correct deck engine(302 or 351w)

you dont need to change your lower at all..just get the proper upper for your lower:bigthumbsup

I'm a little confused as to what the actual problem is...

You have said you have the cast GT40 intake and the tubular... Which one do you have?

What "3inch mounting holes" are you even talking about??

The 302 and 351 upper intakes are the same. The lower intakes are different and the only difference is that the 351 lower intake is wider so it won't even fit on your 302. Not even close.

Explain a little clearer as to what is going on. Keep it simple... :)

Ok, thanks -- let's keep this simple....

I HAVE...
My engine now has the stock..CAST upper cobra intake...

There are 4-bolts where the upper intake mounts to the lower intake -- two in front engine, two back by firewall.

These two bolt holes in front are 2-1/2" apart. They are also 2-1/2" apart in the back

I WANT TO INSTALL....
GT40 tubular intake in place of the cast one for looks ( yes I know they flow the same, but I have a tubular to install)

The tubular also has 4-bolts where the upper intake mounts to the lower ( gasket in between) but....

These two bolt holes in front are 3" apart. They are also 3" apart in the back

-------------------
I thought the tubular intake should just bolt right on directly in place of the cast cobra...
I am totally confused ( and yes I did do a lot of searching here)

Thank you all... I would hate to have to trash a nice looking tubular intake...if only since I don't know some details..

Ok, just to make sure, you say you have the "stock" Cobra intake... Are you sure you don't have the Stock HO intake? Are the ports oval shaped and inline or are the round and criss-crossed?

Even if you DID have the 351 lower intake, the upper should still mount to it just fine. But the lower won't fit in between your heads.

When you got the tubular intake, did you get the lower intake with it? or just the upper?

The GT40 upper will not bolt onto the HO lower intake...

Mystery solved!!! Thank you!!

I have the Cobra HO cast stock intake.....

So now I have to get the lower 302 GT 40 intake...

I guess that comes off a explorer.... what is best year and will my HO fuel rails, injectors and stuff move over ez to the gt40 lower?

any other mods I will need to look out for...

will this conversion drive just fine..? set up for factory EGR ?

this was a big help - thanks everyone... at least I am on the right track and know what to look for

The HO isn't a Cobra intake...

Yeah, all you need is the GT40 lower intake. The Cobra, Explorer, and tubular intake all use the same lower intake. Just make sure it looks like the one in the picture I gave you.

You can find them on Ebay all day long for pretty easy prices. Just make sure it's for a 302 and not a 351.

well it would have been easier if he didnt keep calling the stock intake a cobra intake lol

only cobra intake that came stock on a fox was 1993,and there were less than 5000 made

LoL no big deal. The only reason I caught on was because he was calling it the "STOCK Cobra intake". :)

The main thing is the confusion was solved. The GT40 for both the 302 and 351 uses the same upper but the 351 lower is wider.

As long as the ports are staggered and round, and most of all meant for a 302, the tubular intake will go right on.

Not to mention, the tubular upper looks better than the cast upper anyway. :bigthumbsup
