My 67 coupe doesn't have a factory tach, but I'd like to have an aftermarket tach. I am going to be buying new wiring harnesses for the engine and notice some of them say 'with tach' or 'without tach,' (ie even for the alternator harness).

So which harness should I get?

Most aftermarket tachs are pretty simple to wire; one wire from the neg. terminal of the coil, one wire to ground and one for power for the tach lights. My '66 coupe didn't have any special tach harness; I just ran the necessary wires myself.

Before '67 the tach was an add-on Rally Pac that plugged into the existing wiring under the dash. The factory tach was wired in series with the pink ballast resistor from the ignition switch using the connector for the pink resistor wire that all of the cars used. The lights and clock in the Rally Pac were wired into the power for the courtesy lights, etc. To add a tach or not had no effect upon any of the other wiring in the car you just added a small Rally Pac harness.

In '67 I believe the tachometer went in the hole that normally held an ammeter. Did that mean the ammeter wasn't included with a tach or that it went somewhere else? Either way, I am pretty sure the differences in '67 harnesses all the way to the alternator are in the ammeter wiring or lack thereof. An aftermarket tach will need its own additional wires so for your harnesses I would chose the non-tach version so that the ammeter is wired correctly. Since you won't have a factory tach not having the wiring for it won't bother you.

The '67 schematics are so bad I can't even find the gauges and/or tachometer on any of them. If any of that broke you were supposed to buy a new car. :)

Josh, If you use a harness specifed with tach (67 on up) you will lose the use of you ammeter gauge and your oil pressure gauge. Those harnesses arranged for "with tach" convert those circuits to whats commonly referred to as "idiot lights".

The underdash harness, firewall to headlight harness, and alternator harness are specific to cars with tach or without tach. The differences are small but very significant

So I suggest you purchase harnesses for a car without tach IF you are going to install an aftermarket tach. Most all aftermarket tachs come with a wiring diagram (as manitario indicated) on how to connect it using spade tongue terminal connections.

None of the after market tachs operate like ford "Faira" type tach which is a series type tach.

Just pick one out and we'll help you wire it in.

Wow, $575!!! They sure are proud of those things... I gathered that they still wire up as an after market tach, even though you get the idiot lights in place of the ameter and oil pressure.

To respond to your first post, I'll be getting the non-tach wiring.

Yes, they too still wire up as a non tach arrangement.

Their price of $575 is less than half the price you could expect to pay if you were to install an original ford tach. There's a lot of hidden cost associated with installing an original ford tach in a non tach car.

I'm keen on one of those mini-tachs that mount in the empty space where the clock can go. MU still has them listed but I've heard they have been discontinued.
