I have a 1967 mustang - 289 3speed. The speedometer broke. I have the replacement. I took apart the dash and cannot get the cable out of the back of the speedometer.

What am I doing wrong

do you mean you can't unscrew the cable collar or the cable itself is stuck in the speedometer. I am going to assume the latter. the cable should just pull out. if it is stuck then it has probably galled in the housing. remove the outer part of the cable and squirt some penetrating oil around the cable and let it set for a while then grab the cable with pliers and wiggle it in and out a few times and it should break loose. there should be nothing actually holding it in.

Mine was too tight to loosen with my finger(s). Plus there is no room to get to it. I had to use needle nose pliers to grab and barely twist to break it loose from the back of the speedo. It came out easy then. Just been on there too many years. I could only get to it from one side & i can not remember what side it was.
