89 GT. I have a speedometer that is not showing any MPH in forward or reverse. I have replaced the cable, the gear to a 23 tooth (373 gears). What do you guys suggest the next step be. Is there any way to test the MPH on the cluster to see if the whole cluster needs to be replaced? Or is there a trick when you replace the speedometer cable or gear?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Pull the cable and VSS from the transmission, but leave them connected.
Twirl the gear and see if the needle moves.

If you have a T-5 it is very possible that the retainer clip has failed that anchors the internal speedometer gear and it has "walked" away from the opening. Feel inside the hole to see if the plastic gear is there.

Do you mean the plastic gear that is interchangeable? Its still there I just pulled it out yesterday again. Also do you know how fast you have to turn it in order to get it to show on the speedo? Like do I need a low speed drill or something? And which way do I spin it. Clockwise or Counter? Or does it matter?

Thanks for the help.

No, the one it mates to up inside the transmission that comes loose and slides out of the window. You may be able to see it, but you can stick a finger in and feel if it is there or not.

It doesn't take much speed to register. Have a friend up top looking at the speedometer for signs of life. I think it is CCW, but try both ways. Twirl it as fast as you can with your hand. It should read something!
