2108 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Allsilver86
The other day I was driving and realized my speedo was flat. Its been like that since except at ome point, as I was getting on the highway it started rising in 5mph intervals up to 45 mph stayed at that for a mile or so and went back down. I need to daignose this problem so any ideas or input would be helpful.

Thanks in advance, Aidan

Stepper motor. Look up taninauto on eBay. Give them a call.

^ this. Also do a search on this forum for stepper motor. You'll find a ton of threads on this subject, is a common problem. As a DIY, you have to be handy with a soldering iron.
Yep. As stated. Steppers. Pretty easy fix and cheap too if you are comfortable with a little soldering and popping the dash bits off. It's really no big deal. The steppers are about $6 each. (The dealer is going to probably quote you 4 to 6 hundred bucks to replace the cluster) My gas gauge was not working and my tach was getting sticky. So a few weeks ago I ordered four steppers on eBay and replaced all of the steppers. The whole repair took a couple hours from removal of the cluster to repair and then putting it back in. If you do tackle the job, be sure to have a good solder sucker. The spring action ones work very well.

Best of luck,
Dan

Thanks for the help Dan. I'm trying to decide now if it's worth it to buy all the motors, which in my case is 6. Or to just replace the speedo. Do you think the others will go out soon?

If one went bad then the others certainly could. It's hard to tell though, some hang on for a good while. The old ones are also kinda noisy if you really listen when they're on - the replacement ones are very quiet. I just went ahead and replaced all of them, it really isn't very hard and then you know you have new motors in there rather than taking the dash apart again. Just take your time, have some music on in the background and enjoy the tinkering. It also gives you a chance to really clean the housing and clear plastic. And if you totally hose something you can get replacement clusters on eBay for a hundred bucks or less.
