Hey everyone i was just reading some stats on my car the past couple days and noticed that many had varying top speeds for a stock 02gt. When i bought mine the dealer said it only has a cold air and a exhaust on it and i haven't done anything to it since, but Ive gotten my Stang to 145 and it would have kept going if i hadnt had 2 slow for upcoming traffic.
Is there anyway to tell if maybe my ecu was reflashed or it was tuned at some point? or is there just no speed limiter and the thing will go all the way up to 150 if i give it a chance?
This seems pretty fast for a basically stock mustang.
Thanks!

i don't think there is a speed limiter... It just gets to be too much air to move through the motor when your goin for 150 haha. My 2001 stock will do 136.. so it would be logical to assume the cold air intake and exhaust provide enough of a flow increase to see that gain on the top end.

Im doing a bunch of mods over the winter so I am now curious to see if it will tackle 150 or even 160..

And also can you go just as fast revved out in 4th and you can in 5th??

At first I heard the limiter was at 130, but that turned out to be wrong, then I heard it was 155, and thats what most people say it is. I never tried to find out, but I have pushed my car to 140 before and thats it. It still had plenty more to go also. Like said before, depending on what factory and year they are, I think they have either varying limiters or none at all. Ive also heard that GT's with 17 inch wheels from the factory had no speed limiters, while GT's with 16 inch wheels from the factory were limited to 130 something. All I know now is that mine has no speed limiter other than air resistance because of my Predator. :bigthumbsup

I've had mine to 140 and the speedo was still climbing. I think 150 is doable. You would need a long open road. I wonder what the ticket would be for going 150 in a 70 ? I guess you would just pull over and wait to go to jail for a while. :gringreen

The cop would take your license on the spot then throw you in the back of his car then go 151 all the way back to the station just to one up you. :kooky:

i don't believe there is a speed limiter. when i plugged my SCT xcal3 in and was messing around changing the stock tune, no speed limiter was set.

the real speed limiter on these cars is the gear ratio in 5th. 5th is such a tall gear, and with relatively stock power coming out of the engine, it's tough for our cars to accelerate past 140-155.

The speed limit is set at 155 for cars with 17" wheels and the ZR rated tires. Its the rating for the tires that is the limiting factor. Cars with the cheaper wheels and tires hit the limiter at about 120 or 130. DO NOT remove this limiter if you are not running ZR or WR rated radials.

And if you have a new car and are running cheap tires (R or HR rated, for instance) to save money, keep in mind that these have physical limits that and WILL pop if you push them past them.

The 99-04 Mustangs are fast cars, dollar for dollar.

yea I agree with tripleblack....the car is limited for a reason. it is made to go at that speed and no higher. For instance a Mercedes SL55 can push close to 200 mph but only has components that can handle 155 mph and thats why it is limited to that speed. Do not push your car to speeds it cannot handle, or it will be very very unsafe.

Yea i agree with what tripleblack said my GT which still wears her stock rims came with the 17'' cobra rims stock because she was a premium GT and I have gotten her up to 145MPH and she still had plenty left in her so 17'' rim GT definetely do NOT have a limiter. :bigthumbsup

My dad has had his '01 GT up to 145. Not sure if it could do any more than 150. It's stock, but he thinks that the previous owner had the computer gone over. Ane what's the redline, cuz it is at like 6200 but his has been up to 6500. Thanks

The Rev Limiter should be left as it is UNLESS the car has been modified to allow higher rpms. People who build their cars purposely to rev near 7k or above have to upgrade the engine components involved, forged parts, matched cams, stronger valve springs, etc.

The stock car hits maximum efficiency somewhere around 5700 rpm. Past that point is just wasting fuel and endangering the engine. The rev limiter is set to about 6000 rpm (higher on the 4v and 3v 4.6 engines).

Removing the rev limiter just opens you up to disaster. Given the car's power curves (just check any dyno run chart), you should be able to run the car effectively without ramming into the rev limiter (this is something called "driving"). If you are bouncing off the rev limiter all the time you are the problem, not the car. Removing the rev limiter will, indeed, solve the problem in that case, since very soon thereafter the engine will be destroyed by over-reving.

These two conversations - driving far too fast for the speed rating on your tires - or over-reving the engine so that the valve springs cannot handle the load and you experience valve float or toss a rod - are natural cousins.

Ive had my 02 with full boit on at 150 and friend took pic of it with my nitto 555 in fifth gear at 4000 rpm but i didnt want to push it past that and brake the od bc of the stoper part, but like everyone else has said if your componets cant handle it dont do it!!! :nono: and good point bought the rev limiter after I put my spray on I adjucted my rev limiter down to 6000 insteed of the 6200 just incase i spun real bad abd didnt run out of gas wile its spraying and my rpm switch for my nos was set at 5900 rpm keeping every thing as safe as possabll:bigthumbsup

I was under the impression there wasn't a speedlimiter on the car... Had it up to 145 on the Autobahn, but had to drop down again due to traffic increasing...

Its higher than the normal top speed of the car, on cars that came with the ZR rated tires.

A hand-held tuner can alter it.

Passed my brother on the way home from the dealership after he took me to down to pick up my Mustang and ran it up to 150. Only after some rpm/mph math did I realize that it wasn't actually 150 b/c despite what the dealership told me, the speedometer had not been corrected for the 4.10 gears. Bought a used Hypertech eventually, recalibrated the speedo, and easily got to the actual 150. I figure the 4.10s were a big help in doing that though. Now that I know it's capable of it there's no need/want to do it again, at least on the street :D.

if a cop sees u doing 150 or around there they dont really go after you they just try and hit u with a light to see what type of car it is and radio a head but usually if ur doing it ur right on the high way and then right off

no limits GT

My first mustang was a 95' GT auto with over 100k and i hit 150 mph ....my stang now is a 2002 gt 5-speed and i've hit 150MPH with very few mods on the engine once hit 130MPH a few times since than ..car does it with no problem at all. i think the only stangs with limiters are v6's with 16inch factory rims and maybe newer autos
