So... the first week I have my Mustang V6, I'm driving south on the Sunshine Coast of BC and there's a late 70's Corvette Stingray in the slow lane. We're both going uphill, I pull left to pass, and the guy punches his throttle.

The game's afoot.

My girlfriend's in the car with me and just gives me a raised eyebrow. I know she's thinking "You gonna take that from a GM?". She's a Ford girl all the way. Her dad owns a dark blue fully restored '68 Torino Fastback that is simply gorgeous, and will probably end up in our stable if he ever decides to sell it.

Having to uphold the honor of the blue oval, I accept the Stingray's challenge and deliver some righteous redemption on his arse. Again, remember this is uphill on approximately a 15% grade. The look on his face when he finally caught up with me at a light was priceless. I wasn't looking at the speedo, or distance travelled. I just wanted to see that big red nose receding in my rearview.

ah, now this would probably be a better race than your friends Acura Escort. the late 70's Corvette's are kinda lame in the performance area though. All that emissions crap really bogged the motor down.
Nice kill though! I wouldn't mention the year of the vette until someone really pushed you to tell though. :tongue
maybe you will catch him on a flat surface sometime!

I dunno dude. I've been searching for times on the Stingray:

'69 Corvette StingRay ZL-1

427-ci V-8/550 hp, 0-60 4.5 (est.), 1/4 mile 10.8/130.0

Unless the Stingrays got slower overtime and you're sure it was a late 70's stingray, he woulda smoked you. You're sure it wasn't just a normal 70s vette?

PS Correction for above: Pretty sure they stopped making Stingrays in 1967 and set out a new line called the Shark.

the 70's Corvette's had a chrome emblem on the side that said Stingray. nothing special about them really. and the Corvette did get slower after the 69 or 70 model year. the basic production Corvette was a turd. and they made that body style until 1985 or 1986. then Chevy brought out the C4.
My ex-boss collected cars and he had an early 80's Corvette Stingray. white with red interior. not much of anything to talk about in the performace category.

I didn't see an emblem on the side. My guess is it could have been anywhere from a '77 to '79 Corvette just by the body style. It certainly wasn't an 80's model.

Also, a bit embarrasing here, I didn't realize that "Stingray" referred to a different class of Corvette. I assumed all of the '60s and '70s models were called Stingrays. :shrug

Disappointing. Hardly a worthy kill then.

I think that might be a high estimate. More like 150-160, I bet. (too lazy to google right now)
A friend used to have a '76 vette with the 350 and I used to smoke him in my four door '73 Torino with a 351 2-barrel.
(He hated me telling people that I killed his Corvette with a 4-door... )

Well, I laid the smack down on a few of those 70'ish Vette's at the Woodward Dream Cruise this summer... The look on those guy's faces when they realized they were getting slapped around by a little 'ol V6 was pretty priceless... LOL!

Yeah, it's a joke with a 350 Chevy motor. Sad part is that the punch line isn't that funny. A few inexpensive parts and these things can be a very big pain in the ass. Hell, I get the same line of thinking all the time, 'Old Fox Stang, $hit that things only got what, 210hp?' Yeah, you got it chief, lets go for a hundred, just for $hits and giggles, see how bad you smoke me

Yeah, I was watching Speed channel, Muscle Car Magazine/Show...whatever, it was all about the stingrays/maco shark Corvettes, and yes they were way down on hp in the late 70's, I know it was under 200. But the other morning on my way home from work, I was behind a real stingray, somewhere between a 64-67 year model. I wasn't provoking a race and he didn't even let me line up with him. We went around a few slow cars and he stomped on it before I could even pull up next to him. Well I might lose but no way I'm backing down, so I floor it, right on his arse up to 85 in a 40 mph zone, he back off and pointed to his speedo. I stomped it again and said goodbye. Funny thing that vette couldn't shake me, we were dead even. I don't know what size motor, probably a 327, or it could have been a early 350. I know it wasn't a big block....he would have killed me. I wish we would of had the chance to line up dead even. I was pleasantly suprised, that CAI and tune are paying off!
