Suspension Upgrades

1762 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  BadlandsGhost
Hey everyone, newbie here. I'm currently in the process of doing some engine upgrades with my 87 GT ( heads, Upper/Lower, maybe even a stroker Kit) but before I go after all this power, I would like to get some supsension upgrades. Now when I am driving, my steering feels a little loose, and the rear seems loose sometimes. Could someone give me some input on what would be the best suspension upgrades to correct these problems.

Thanks

To tighten up the front you could get some lowering springs and a strut tower brace. Be sure to get a brace that clears your manifold though, some aftermarket ones need special attention.

You might want to take your car to a tire shop to get it inspected. I noticed much tighter steering when I replace my rack and pinion.

Chances are your rear control arm bushings (both upper and lower control arms) are shot and allow lots of travel. That is understandable for the age of rubber from 1987. Polyeurethane bushings are available and greatly help noise, traction and life.
I spent some money and here is what I did..it works great!

HPM mega Bite Jr. lower control arms in rear (dumped the Ford Racing ones..HPM's are much better),boxed off some new Ford Racing upper control arms for the rear, Ford racing springs, lakewood 50/50 shocks in rear and lakewood 70/30 struts in front, Nitto drag radials in the rear with a 3.73 gear,31 splines and Ford Racing Axle girdle...I know I could have spent more and gotten more, but what I have seems to work really well for what I do..
What they said, plus check the tie rods as well. I replaced mine, and there was a world of difference in the steering feel. My inners were so loose that they "dangled" when they were unhooked. Like 1/16 of an inch rattle.
My next projects the LCAs, to kill the shake at speed....And since the fronts coming apart anyway, new springs, LOL:bouncer
