Swapping a 1995 Expedition 5.0L Engine into a 1995 Mustang GT

How's it going y'all.

Brand new to the All-Ford Mustangs group. In the next year I plan on starting a Mustang build. I'm familiar with how engines are built, wiring, etc. I think the biggest thing I'm trying to figure out is the PCM (Power Control Module). I plan on taking a Ford 5.0L engine with the electronic ignition system out of a 1995 Ford Expedition and dropping it into (plan on anyway) a 1995 Ford Mustang GT shell. I just want to know if I will need a completely new programmed PCM, if the 1995 Mustang GT PCM will work or if I put the Expedition PCM in the mustang would it work with the Mustang as well? I do have access to Ford PTS, and I looked up the PCM pinout on the Expedition and Mustang and some wires were correct, not there or in different locations. Maybe I could swap the pins on the Mustang harness side and use the PCM from the Expedition?

Any help would be awesome, and I appreciate y'all!

There is no '95 expedition so I assume you mean Explorer but those didn't get the 5.0 in them until 1996. Easiest way to get it running is to ditch the Explorer coil packs, put a distributor back in it and keep the '95 Mustang ECU and wiring harness.

That's my bad. Yeah, an Explore, most definitely not an Expedition. I actually just put the VIN back into Ford PTS and it came up as a 1996 Explorer with the 5.0L SEFI. I understand what you mean though. What would be the route you would take if you took the 5.0L out of the Explorer? Appreciate your feedback.

Swapping the Explorer motor into a Mustang used to be very common as the Explorer heads and intake are better than the standard 5.0 HO parts and basically equivalent to what came on the early SVT Cobra. There's a standard recipe out there for how to do this but I'll give you what I recall off the top of my head.

-'96 used the Iron GT-40 head which can use standard Mustang exhaust headers. Later Explorers have the GT-40P head with revised spark plug locations so they need a different header.

-Explorer cam is very small. Replace with at least a stock HO cam or preferably something aftermarket.

-Upgrade the valve springs as the Explorer ones are too weak to use with a larger cam. There used to be packages specifically for this, not sure if they're still available or if you'll have to put something together yourself.

-Run the Explorer intake without the 90° throttle body elbow. You can convert to the FOX style throttle body that faces the strut tower or get the adapter to run the SN95 style TB. You have to tap the lower intake for the Mustang IAT sensor. You may need shorter engine mounts, I can't recall if the Explorer intake hits the hood when used in an SN95.

-As mentioned in my first post, ditch the coil packs and run the Mustang distributor. Converting isn't worth the hassle.

-I think you have to run the Mustang oil pan and pickup.

-You will likely want a larger than stock MAF housing and 24 Lb./hr injectors to take advantage of the increased airflow.

All of that information was super helpful. I've been hearing around that the Explorer heads were better so I'm glad you can actually confirm that. Are there any modifications you will have to do if you remove the coil packs and just drop a Mustang distributor?

I believe putting the Mustang Distributor into the Explorer motor is a bolt in affair. I've never done it myself but can't recall anyone ever having issues with it.
