Hi Everyone,
I have a 2011 Mustang 5.0 that was ordered new and delivered in Fall of 2010. It's probably part of the first batch off the line. As of right now, every suspension component in the car has swapped out with the exception of the front lower control arm. I know that the 2011 models have an EPAS coding error in the crosswind/road crowning correction program that made the steering shudder violently if anything but the cushy hydrobushing was fitted to the front. I've even been able to trigger the shudder in sport mode on the highway before (though it wasn't as extreme as the other videos you find out there).
Now that the S197 II cars are older, it seems that the steering issue has been isolated to only 2011 models (and maybe some very early 2012 models). Back in the day, I remember the fix for most people was buying an entire new steering rack from a later model or a Boss with a price tag to match (often $1,000+). Fortunately for me, and unfortunately for others, it seems like the general populous crashes Mustangs - a lot. I was able to find a very inexpensive, but otherwise mint, 2014 Mustang GT entire EPAS steering rack at the junkyard (correct dimension specification for my 19" Brembo wheels).
My question is, if the EPAS rack is exactly the same EXCEPT for the computer programming can I just swap the computer module itself? It seems to be held onto the rack with just security-style torx screws. If so, that would make it an extremely easier swap than doing the entire rack. Has anyone tried this before? I've attached a couple images to this post as reference.
