Can anyone help me out, I need to know how to switch out a manual transmission for an automatic. It's a 1986 ford mustang 5.0 V8. My transmission syncronizers have gone out and my brother in law has an automatic transmission that he will cut me a deal on, so I need to make the switch and just don't know how to go about it. Thanks in advance!

You'll need to get a 50 oz flexplate, pedal assembly to take out the clutch pedal, automatic shifter, and then it should be a straight swap. Be prepared, if it doesn't run right afterwards, to look for an automatic computer. You can use a manual with an automatic computer but you may not be able to use an automatic with a manual computer. If you can, great, if not you should be able to find one with as many doing the opposite swap.

Mine had a manual computer in it at first and it ran but I think just to be on the safe side find an automatic computer but see how it runs first.

i have read that the only difference is the timing strategy on shifts. autos pull timing while manuals do not.
