T-5 to a t-56 help!

How hard is it to change to a t-56 from a t-5 in a 86 fox body?

Shouldnt be pretty hard if you got the right tools and a donor car, transmission member is different, driveshaft is shorter. There's a company out there (can't member the name right now) that has a complete kit down to the last bolt fairly cheap. Google it, I know someone is making it. :bigthumbsup
It's not an easy, direct swap, because the crossmember and exhaust will be affected. You'll have to get one meant for the Fox because all 6 speeds aren't the same, unless you want to cut the floor to make another shifter hole, which if you did it'd mean losing the center console.
They're also heavy, and serve very little benefit due to the gearing unless you specify a custom gearset.

The T56 in a Viper handle 600ft/lb, and some times they even twin turbo charge it, some will push 1000hp plus and the tranny still hold up if you drive it right, like don't power shift it
by the way, at promotion perfomance, you can get a modified Tremec T5, or a pro GF/T5 that will just bolt up to you engine and will need no modification, and they runs it in a high 9s, in a 3000 lb plus car, for around $2,600. and it weight alot less than a T56
The Viper is old news nowadays. Tremec has just released the new T56 Magnum. It is the aftermarket version of the Tr-6060 that comes in the new GT500KR and is rated at 700ft/lbs. The bad news is currently, they don't have one that will bolt up to the 5.0 based motors yet, only the modular 4.6/5.4L.:so They are working on a 5.0 based version though.:bigthumbsup

We just got 10 of them in last week and they are bad a$$. They are not much bigger than the old T56 012 which is a direct bolt in replacement for the 5.0 based tranny. The bad news here is the 012 aren't being built right now and your only hope is to find a dealer that has one on the shelf. I know we have been trying for months to fulfill an order for an 012 T56 for a customer and ended up switching him over to a T56 Magnum. We are currently working on a proto-type plate and bell for the magnum so we can hook it up to a 5.0 based motor. Stay tuned.....:bigthumbsup
