Depends on which county you live in. Out in the boonies where I am, there aren't really any emissions control laws. You don't have to get inspected at all to register your car. In Memphis, Chattanooga, or the Nashville area you do have emission control laws.
Oh...the one time I've ever had to go through an inspection in TN was in Memphis, with the company car for the place I was working in college. It was a joke of an inspection. They looked at all the lights and the windshield wipers to make sure they functioned, then stuck a wand up the tailpipe and had me gun it. It failed. So they had me stand on the gas for a couple of minutes to "warm it up" and they managed a passing reading and let me out of there.
The inspections I had to go through in Houston were a thousand times worse. That place was a racket. In Memphis the inspections were actually at a government run facility. In Texas they contracted out to individual stations...who wanted to find things wrong so they could charge you for fixing them. And you were not allowed to get things fixed somewhere else or it totally invalidated your inspection and you couldn't renew the registration. That was the most rediculous place to own a car I've ever seen.
