The better dual exhaust? X pipe? or H pipe?

1585 Views 11 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  JonR2006
Hello,

I'm definitely going to put dual exhaust on my 2003 V6.

The question is.. what kind?

I'm perusing American Muscle's web site, and I see the the X pipe dual exhaust, complete kit.. that's cool.

But then I read that even an X pipe as some restriction at the "X". And that an H pipe is better.

But as I read.. it looks like an H-pipe version isn't bolt-on. Welding and finagling is needed.

So what's better? I don't mind doing a bit of extra work during the install if it's worth it.

Pros and Cons? Discuss?

Thanks in advance,

For extra credit (And I know this may sound sacrilegious) But I'm toying with the idea of trying to make my mustang being, really, really quiet.

I just don't like loud vehicles. Just my personal preference. Would adding a second set of mufflers quiet things down?

Pros? Cons? Will it work?

Thanks in advance...

run cats, 2 and chambered muffler....2.25" is big enough
Run a h-pipe.
Well, the H-pipe produces more of a throaty sound while the X-pipe brings out the raspy tone that a motor naturally produces, but it increases the balance of exhaust side of the motor. I am running an X-pipe with super 44s from flowmaster and there is really not a tone i can hear. It does drone in the cab but i tolerate it. http://youtu.be/m9Hj9t6BYFE that is a clip of my car at idle. Now remember a cam will change the tone somewhat especially at idle so i recommend the super 40s. I believe, on a stock motor, they sound muchhhhh better than the super 44s. Also in combination with the exhaust buy a SR CAI, a cheep one, and that will help with the exhaust tone in the higher rpms. Good luck, keep us posted.

Hey Ranger,

This is really up to you and it comes down to personal preference.

Personally, I am a huge fan of the PaceSetter V6 Dual Exhaust Adapter Kit coupled with the Flowmaster American Thunder Catback Exhaust when it comes to a V6!

This combo provides a great tone that is not over-the-top loud while freeing up some horsepower. I love it and I think you will too!

Check it out and let me know what you think!

Let me know if you have any questions.

I was eye-balling that exact same combination. I presume, for my V6, I'll need to add a hanger kit..

I am worried about clearance at the bumper. The GTs have cutouts for dual exhaust. V6s do not... So will the flow-master, with straight tips.. clear?

Hey Ranger,

I have seen this combination in person and clearance is not an issue, you should have no problem as long as it is installed properly, it just might take a little bit of tweaking.

you will love this kit!

Let me know if I can be of any assistance!

Update:

These have been installed. I took it to a shop to do the work. (They have a lift and I don't). It ended up taking several hours to install.

From what the guy at the shop said.. the biggest issue was the hangers for the cat-back. They were nearly worthless. He had to do a lot of work to get the cat-back to hang correctly.

The H-Pipe took some work as well. But he eventually got it. (The H-pipe was welded).

But the sound is very good. My brother, nephew, and I agree. Sounds about as good as you can get with a V6. Quiet enough to be enjoyable. But a nice mellow rumble too.

+1 to a sound clip. Make sure your mic is good on the camera that is recording it or else it wont sound good. This will be my decision maker when i decide to change my exhaust up again ahah!
H-pipes and V6s FTW! I would love to hear a sound clip as well.

Thanks for following up on your thread too. Wish more people would do that.
