This is NOT the Regular Rear Axle Venting, Right?

My 2013 V6 had the usual axle vent leaking. The axle was wet, I wiped it dry, and all was well. No problems.

With my 2014 GT, however, this amount of leaking doesn't seem normal, right? My growing concern started yesterday when I noticed there were fluid/oil marks on my driveway. I had never seen them before because my car is always parked on top of the same place. I pulled to the side yesterday to wash my car, which is when I noticed the spots.

So I looked under the car and found the differential in this condition. The axle near the vent is wet, which I would expect, but this looks like the entire rear differential is leaking. Does that seem right to you? I think I'm going to schedule some time with the dealership, because this looks like it's a little more than the regular venting.

I've always had gear whine since I have factory 3.73's, but I feel like the gear whine might be getting a little louder (used to only hear it in 5th or 6th gear, now I can hear it in 1st and 2nd). It might just be the changing temperatures, but figured I'd check in with you guys to see what you think. The gear whine is not terrible, and I've avoided taking it into the dealership thus far because I've only heard horror stories about GT's getting gears replaced by the dealership due to whine.

Definitely not normal. I wonder why some cars seem to have this issue but not others? Even after full track days I never had that problem.

You can buy the Boss 302/Track Pack differential cover from Levittown for Tousley for about $60+shipping. It will let you plug the vent hole on the axle tube and relocate the vent to the top of the cover.

Unfortunately you have to take it in; might not be pinion seal since the area around the pinion is dry, but maybe it is the cover seal? Either way, its bad news if you run your axle dry. I had the same issue in April. I have factory 3.73s and have had whine since new as well. I recently had my ring and pinion replaced under warranty and the whine is not as loud. Unfortunately I now have driveline vibration at highway speeds mystery.gif

The cover seal is leaking. Those metal covers are easy to distort if someone gets over zealous tightening the bolts. I'd put the Boss aluminum cover on it, relocate the vent to the cover and call it a day.

I had the same problem until i upgraded to the jlt resivoir tank it takes the expanded fluid sends it to the resivoir and when the axle cools back down the oil drains back to the rear. Now ford makes its own part for this issue but it doesnt work as well as the jlt resivoir:

They use RTV for the seal. It can leak if not enough is used. Too much sealant is not good either. Fel-pro makes a nice gasket but Ford saves $$ by using 5 cents worth of goop. The differential holds 3.75 pts. A small amont of oil spread around looks much worse than it is. You should be OK if it hasn't been leaking for weeks.

Ford 8.8 takes 3 quarts not 3.75 pts!!!

Yeah thats not normal. I'd take that in and get it fixed.

Am I the only one that hasn't had leaky vent issues or whine from 3.73 gears? Seems to be a popular issue.

Horror stories well only on the net. Using silicone to seal part why not theres less issues using it than gaskets.

Take it in have it fixed

Not according to the Ford fluid charts. I have drained many a 8.8's and its 3.75 pts or 60 oz.

Correction it should be 3.3 pts. The 8.8 has a differnt fill dependent on the vehicle.

No gear whine or leaks so far here @ 18k but the Pirellis, with 60% tread, sound like truck tires on some roads.

DON'T buy it on a retail site. You'll pay 2.5 to 3 times more than you need to.

Don't just take it in for the leak. Also have them address the gear whine. Especially if your '14 GT is new, you have 5yr/60K driveline warranty. I had to have my pinion bearings replaced twice, and the gear set once at only 9K miles (3:31 gear set, stockers) on my 2012 GT. See the "3:73 gear whine" thread.

If it gets any louder by 10,000 miles (currently at 8,500), then I will make sure it's addressed. Right now I can hear it but it isn't annoying. And they definitely don't howl like I've heard on some GTs.

My fear is that I'm going to go days without my car (this is my only vehicle, so it means I'd have to get a rental) only to have them take multiple tries to get it right. As long as the whine is not indicative of premature failure, I'm okay with it.

I'm at the dealership now. The dealership was fine with swapping in the Boss differential cover that i bought. As many mentioned, they said the leak was not normal. They're also ordering the axle vent overflow. Thankfully it wasn't a pinion leak!

The Boss cover is far superior. Feels much more solid.

i gotta tell you even with ford's axle vent over flow it will not stop the leak it just slows it down!
