Do you have a timing light?

How do you know your timing is off a lot? That will help give us a startign point in helping you get things dialed in.

Timing:

1 Be sure car is at normal temp
2 Remove plastci plug from distributor pigtail
3 Hook up timing light to battery and no. 1 cylinder
4 Hold distributor(and don't let go) and loosen retaining bolt on manifold
5 Have someone point timing light at hamonic balancer(behind crankshaft pulley)
6 Turn distibutor until desired timing is reached. 10 deg is stock. 12-14 is reccomended
7 Tighten dist back down
8 remove timing light
9 have fun

Most of the time the stock distributor and block have notches in them to give the base timing position. Line these two marks up and you should be close to the stock setting. How did it get off?
