Tinting tail lights

Besides the kit from AM, has anyone used another vinyl kit? I want to tint my tail lights just enough to take the edge off. MY concerns are the quality of the kit and how good they are cut. I don't want to spray them.

Before I bought AM's Aero taillights, I used these guys:

2010-2012 Mustang Smoked Lights

I was impressed with the product but it looks like the prices have gone up since I bought them...
Unfortunately, spray is the only thing that will give you the look you're after. The vinyl pieces from AM only cover the face to my understanding, leaving the side perimeter of the lights untinted. I used their pre-cut tint for all my other lights, but I used 4 light coats of VHT for my tails. No spraying experience whatsoever, no sanding, no clearcoat. I'm pretty happy with it, but I may redo it, sand them down, and do a clear coat for a more gloss look in the future.

I was against spraying because it would be difficult to remove if I got pulled over for it. At the same time, I will want the side of the tail lights covered as well. looks like spraying is the way to go.
I live in the Fort Worth area where bigworm graphics is located and have seen multiple corvettes, camaros, challengers and mustangs with their vinyls and they all have looked good and seem to have held up. They use a good quality 4m thick film. They are more expensive though. But the vinyl is thicker than every other film I have seen so maybe that's why? Just my .02

I used big worm on mine. Very happy with the quality.
Thanks for all the responses. I am going to look into all these and purchase what is best for me. ~Thanks
We all agree tinted taillights look great, but I want to know how dark are they when you hit the brakes ?

How much does tinting hinder the taillight brightness at night ?

As a former LEO, I sure as HELL don't trust other drivers BEHIND me! :nono:

Especially when they are texting, drinking, eating, smoking, reading a book, messing with the little dog on the lap....etc.... all at the SAME time! :heha:
I got the AM tint and the MMD taillight trim. It looks great and was easy to do. There is a slight halo from where the lights aren't covered, so I'm going to take the lights out and paint what the trim doesn't cover black.

Here is one with the parking lights in and brake lights on

The pros of tail light tinting:
1. Looks sexy as hell
2. Provides a great contrast, so drivers don't second guess whether the brakes are on or not

The cons:
1. In direct sunlight or when the lights are dirty, they are more difficult to see lit up in the day (third brake light still shines bright enough)
2. You could possibly ruin your stock lights or get a bad look and have to redo if you aren't careful doing it.

Regardless of whether or not you tint your tails, you know there's always some F**** idiot who won't be watching you and will rear-end you one day. Since I've tinted my tails, I've been more cautious not to slam the brakes on. Only issue I had was some woman who was on the phone and I gradually slowed from around 45 to 10 mph to make a turn, and she must have not realized I was braking and she came right up on my ass and started flipping me off. I mean, there's no excuse not to see our cars. We have HUGE tail lights and SEQUENTIAL BLINKERS for christ' sake.

EDIT: One other huge problem i have is with lifted trucks. The combination of my tinted lights, them being dusty, and my GT500 spoiler makes them completely unable to tell when I am braking due to their bird's eye view above my car. A lifted hummer nearly crushed me in rush hour traffic one day.

Here are some pics of the lights illuminated at night. I can take more pics if you'd like. The lights are clearly visible from 10-15 car lengths in the day time I'd estimate. (possibly more)

No tint will give you the professional look as a well done spray w/ clear.

This was the last pair of taillights I did:

1 thorough light coat and one medium-heavy coat of VHT

I had the raxioms for like 3k miles and took them off. My chief complaint was that ugly rectangle reflection pattern in the outside lamp housing that is a complete mismatch to the other two. Other than that, they weren't really dark enough and scratched very easily.

It's not so much the idiot who rear-ends you, I'm more concerned with the lawyer/insurance company that refuse to pay for the damage by claiming your brake lights are not visible.

I agree that it is total BS, but I have a friend working in the accident investigation business and you would be surprised by the success rate of these BS claims.

How do clear/reverse lights look when spayed ?

Where can one buy VHT ?
I purchased the American Muscle graphics last week. I didn't realize you could spray your tails so easily but I was a little disappointed the vinyl graphics didn't cover the entire light but at the same time I figured that would make it more visible. They look really good and pretty dark but I was surprised how easily the light comes through even when just the lights are on. Lights off it's very dark looking, lights on it's tough to tell there is even anything on the lenses if you didn't know better. I'm overall really happy w/ the AM graphics and would recommend them. I'll upload a pic this evening or tomorrow of one I shot in the morning in a Lowe's parking lot real quick.

I too have the AM kit.

I'm a bit reluctant to install them.....concerned they maybe too dark at night.

They won't at all. I got out of my car Sunday evening and went around to the back w/ just the headlights on and I was really surprised that I couldn't really tell. Maybe 15% less light but it's not much at all. I bet if you ask anybody they wouldn't even know you had anything on the lights if they were on. Btw you will love the way they look in the day time and it only takes about 15-20 min to put them on :bigthumbsup
