Towing Capabilities of a v6.

I have been trying to figure out what is safe to tow behind my 2008 v6. Some forums say up too a small boat. Which is what I would like to tow due to the absence of a truck/suv. What do you guys think?

look in owners manual at the rated capacity. the motor will pull it fine.
Wrong section. But it will pull more than the new V6 since it was originally a truck engine.

Sorry about the wrong section. Still new to the whole forums thing.

I don't see why not.
My dad used to tow his 454 powered drag boat in his 1982 Trans Am.

Where are you going put the hitch?

to what extent do u consider a small boat? because if ur takin a boat id be more woried about getting up the wet loading ramp.
water+mustang= nightmare
water+mustang+ trailer pulling u down the ramp= hell

Mustangs are not tow vehicles. They are rated for 1000lbs and I would be wary of even pulling that much weight. I have no doubt the drivetrain can pull it, but the car was never designed to tow so you'd be taking a huge risk.

As for a 1982 Firebird towing a boat, that is a perfect case of overloading a tow vehicle. Just because you can buy a 3500lb rated hitch for a car does not mean it can actually safely tow that much......

While the motor would likely do the job, I'd be worried about brakes, chassis, suspension, etc.

Never towed stuff like that though, so no idea really :shigrin
i towed my little fishing boat with a 4 cyl pt cruiser with no problems at all. i might get a hitch one day for my v6 and use it, as my old truck costs too much to use. these cars would tow more than you think. i agree though, a super steep wet ramp and a heavy boat might be a challenge, but it would be for any car without 4wd. they make a nice hidden hitch for the stangs. do some searches on here, there has been many posts about it :)

It would be a nightmare on a slick ramp. I was thinking more along the lines of purchasing then into a slip. The initial tow was more of my concern than anything else. Where I live right now there is no room for a boat to be parked. Thanks for all the help though. You guys have been very informative. :worship

tub her out put on some 33's and youll be fine.

i think with some stiffer springs, a lsd, and soem good rated wet tires, you would be ok for a general boat.

but nothing big.

my truck still slips some times, tehn again i got a 4200 lb ranger rig

people use things they weren't made for all the time, I used a knife as a pry-bar once, didn't work out right, broke the knife. I'd upgrade the rear suspension and tire type to truck standards, the engine will be fine i know cause they are better than the early 4bangers they used to have in trucks... u could pull a full excursion with 4 cylinders down out of 8 in a gmc 3500 tow truck u can haul anything, providing the suspension tires and brakes hold out... ull prolly do tons of wheelies... FUN!!!
