I'm asking for a friend because I can't figure it out. It's a v6 2000 auto. Throws a tps check engine light. We have replaced it 3 times 2 motorcrafts and one autozone special and the motorcraft make the car run like crap. The autozone let's it run beside the bad gas milage. The check engine light will come on and off. Full tune up was done and the gas milage is tops 14. Any ideas?

IMO, you are wasting your time replacing so many TPS sensors. The TPS is not used the same way on 96+ MY cars. Please read the following for more information.

For us out in Internet land to be able to help you, information is needed. Post the entire DTC code and everything done. There are 1000's of codes and they each have a story to tell.

However, IF the codes really is directly related to the TPS and several have already been replaced, THEN look for a wiring problem.

Check fuse F2.2 and F2.8 in the CJB. Not a bad idea to check all of the fuses just to be sure.

CLEAN the TPS electrical connector. Look for bent/pushed pins. Re-grease with a small amount of silcone di-electric grease. The same kind used on spark plugs.

For bad gas mileage, review the conditon of the ignition system. Plugs good? Wires good? Any vacuum leaks? Any exhaust leaks? Is the MAF clean?

How about the cam sensor? Any noise from the front of the engine? Has the alternator been tested for excessive AC ripple?

OBTW, if the only problem is a bad TPS, this is unlikely to cause poor gas mileage.

If on the other hand you are working on an idle problem, then go back to basics outlined in the post.

Remember. No information = no help.
