transmisison leak at the neutral start switch

I am trying to troubleshoot a leak at the netral start switch. I could really use some help here. The manual that I have is not very specific on how the neutral start switch is assembled onto the transmission casing. This is a C4 automatic transmission on a 66 mustang conv. Is there a gasket that I need to replace?

thx

There is no seal or gasket on the neutral start switch, however there are two seals in/on the manual shift linkage. One is installed in the case, it is a small oil seal and the other is an o-ring that fits inside the manual shift linkage and around the kickdown lever. The case mounted oil seal requires you to remove the linkage from inside the case, IOW you must remove the pan and valve body from the trans. It can be done while in the car and would be a good oppotunity to put in a shift kit!!:)

thank you for your input. Is the manual shift linkage hidden when viewing under the car? I do not recall seeing the linkage when I was under the car yesterday. perhaps it was hidden by the neutral start switch.

I was browsing for a shift kit just now, but could not identify which one I should get. Can you point me to the right site? perhaps a part number?

thx again...

There are two possibilities and it depends on whether your C4 is actually a '66 or has been replaced by a newer C4. There is normally a metal tag under one of the bolts holding the servo covers on the side of the trans, that has ID numbers. There are two levers that come out the side of the trans at the NS switch, one is between the switch and the trans case, the other is outside the switch. I'll take a picture of mine later today so it is easy to see.

thx. I will look at which one i got. most likely, I have the original one.

If you can post some pictures, htat would be great. also, if you can point me to the right link where to buy the shift kit or part number, i would greatly appreciate it.
The transmissions are upside down in my pictures(draining oil and more stable that way).

The C4 linkage picture shows the two levers and where they are on your trans. The blue arrow is pointing to the manual shift lever(shift handle rod hooks to it), the red arrow is the kickdown linkage(hooked to carb linkage).

The green arrow in the case seal picture shows the oil seal behind the neutral safety switch and manual shift lever. The kickdown lever, NS switch and manual shift lever all must be removed to replace it(requires dropping the trans pan and valve body).

The blue arrow in the linkage o-ring picture shows the o-ring behind the kickdown lever and inside the manual shift lever. Both the o-ring and the case oil seal can be purchased thru your local auto parts.

I bought my shift kit and rebuild kit from Northern Auto Parts, I can't help with the part number until I know what year your C4 is. The '65-'69 takes a completely different kit than the '70 and up C4.

Good luck!!

thank you for everything...I am convinced I need a shift kit. mine is kinda loose which may be contributing to the leak....
You are welcome!! You might consider getting the '70 and up valve body to replace your old version. It is more user friendly and has better shift characteristics stock. It will bolt in place of the early version.

mmm.. i noticed a tag w/numbers on it. dammit, didn't write it down. But i didn't see a year stamped on it. What kind of id numbers are we looking for to identify the year its from?

C4 up to 66 has a 6 as trans code
67 and up has a W

It is the last digit in the plate (usually and easiest to find in the window)

Kinda dug up an old one! The tag will have a series of letters and numbers with spaces between parts. The whole tag will tell you what the trans is from and for if you have the books. I believe I can make use of a friends reference book to decode the code.:hihi: There is another trans thread that has a tag code sequence listed.
