I have a 4 speed toploader. I have looked up the case number and founf it is a wide ratio. Is it possible to make a close ratio out of it and would it be cheapaer to find a close ratio but then I might have to rebuild it anyway. Can anyone help with this issue?

Is there a particular reason that you want a close ratio? I'm only asking because I've got a close ratio in my 65 coupe that I vintage race. I've used a close ratio on the street, as have others I know, and it's not very user friendly. 1st gear is almost useless. For road racing, they're great. For the street, not so much.

If you want to convert yours to close ratio, contact David Kee

He can hook you up.

The gears in the case make it a wide or close ratio tranmission. You should be able to convert it, but I have no idea how much it will cost. Good luck, I always loved a top loader 4 speed.

To convert to a close ratio is not so expensive. You need to change the input shaft and the cluster gear. Both can be purchased from TopLoader Heaven.

When rebuilding a 4-speed toploader, usually (not always) these are not replaced unless they are worn or defective.

I rebuild toploaders.

Make sure you have yours rebuilt by someone who knows toploaders and knows how to rebuild them. Always replace all bearings and blocker rings and related items.

Why do you want a close ratio anyway ??
