Hello, I've got a 96 mustang GT auto tranny that just went out. From what my Chilton Mustang book the auto tranny used from 96-04 is the is the 4R70W. Just to verify, would all years 96-2004 Gt auto transmission fit a 96 mustang Gt auto? Thanks for the help!

It will work with those years....as far as wiring and connectors there could be something different not 100% sure someone should know on that though.

If you want a "plug and play" swap, don't use a transmission from a 99+ in a 98 and older car.

Why?

See:

Note the differences between an VSS sensor and an OSS sensor. The sensor outputs are not compatible with each other and have to match the wiring harness AND PCM.

Transmissions from similar MY's may work from Town Car, Crown Vic, Grand Marquis. However, it may be necessary to swap the DTR and wiring harness. Don't get rid of the old unit until the job is DONE.

My recommendation, stick as close as possible to the same MY unless your mechanical transmission skills are A+.

I put a 99 T45 in my 97. Just had to get a speedcal to make the speedo work. Also had to notch the transmission crossmember but worked great.
4.6 in those years, have the same bolt pattern, so +1 about any in that year bolting up.
