Tremec Transmission

I think my tranny just blew up. God awful noises coming from under the car even when it is in neutral. I'm going to have it towed to my mechanic's on Monday. My car only has 35K easy miles on it but I'm betting Ford won't do anything because of the after market shifter (only put it in because the car never shifted properly).

How much can I expect to pay for a Tremec and which one do I want? Is the MT-82 worth rebuilding?

Could be the clutch. I've had a damping spring fall out and it made all sorts of nasty noises. Can you depress the pedal and shift in and out of gears?
I agree with it being the clutch. I blew that up with a hard 2-3 shift around the red line and it made terrible noises with the chunk that ripped off it.
Hopefully it is only clutch related and that may not be covered under warranty. But if it is the transmission it should still be covered under warranty. The aftermarket shifter should not be blamed. Heck it is likely still remotely located from the transmission.

But to answer your question. I spoke to somebody today at our mustang club meeting and he mentioned he was planning on putting a tremec in his 12 Boss 302 mustang and he mentioned 6000 dollars. So that is likely the ball park figure not including labor. He says he is tired of getting locked out of 4th gear at high rpm shifts. The gearing is different too. He mentioned needing to go to 410's and that in reality the car would need like 430's to compare with MT82 and 383's.

With the car in neutral it makes such a horrible sound I'm afraid to start it. I'm going to wait until Monday and see what my mechanic has to say. Thanks for the response.

With the engine turned off I just shifted through all of the gears including reverse? It seemed to feel normal.

Is the MT-82 worth rebuilding of is it cheaper to just buy a rebuilt one?

Engine off doesn't mean anything. As of right now my money is still on the clutch. When the spring fell out on my pickup it made a horrid screaching noise and ended up jamming the clutch to the point that I couldn't fully disengage it to shift. Don't just go jumping to the transmission being a problem, because it may not be.

I am thinking it is the clutch as well.

I love my Tremec conversion, but there were some issues to work through which are now all solved.

I am no tech/mechanic, so please don't take anything I write as gospel.

But:

If it makes a noise with the engine running but the trans in neutral (clutch engaged), that probably means it's the clutch. Nothing in the transmission is engaged, but the clutch is, so something is rattling around the clutch/PP/flywheel.

Add in that it still shifts fine, and it's even more convincing.

I definitely hope that's all it is.

If that's all that's wrong your friend should just put in the MGW race spec shifter.

You need to bone up on how a manual transmission works, my friend. If the clutch pedal isn't depressed, in neutral the main/input shaft and the counter shaft are spinning. As are all of the gearsets between the two. Manual transmissions actually work quite a bit differently than most people assume.

That said, I hope it is the clutch, and the symptoms certainly make it likely.

reinstall the stock shifter and take it in man

Not to mention that shifting through gears with the engine off doesn't mean anything and that with a clutch problem the transmission more than likely won't shift correctly, if at all.

I replaced my MT 82, with a Tremec. And im not sorry.
H,

although it would suck to have the clutch fail it would be nice if that was the root of all your issues.

good luck

I appreciate all in input - the tow truck will be here in an hour. More to follow. Darn I wish I'd kept the old shifter when I had the MGW installed but as always my hindsight is 20/20.
I'm very interested to hear what is wrong with it. Regardless of whether it is a clutch problem or something internal to the transmission, I'm not sure that they could point the finger at an aftermarket shifter.
not successfully in court but if they are mean they could just say it.
