Hi Guys,

I've been sidelined from my project for some time now but have got back on deck and am ready now to lift my motor out to prep the engine bay for a repaint.

I've got myself a carb lift plate that attaches to the inlet manifold which I can then attach my lifting chain to and then pull the motor.

Has anybody else used one of these plates before to lift the engine?

Is it safe to just use the carb mounting studs and nuts or should I remove the studs and use some high tensile bolts instead to hold down the place?

Thanks for any advice!

I'd be more worried about the hoist ram failing right about the time your pulling the engine over the core support! If you google those plates, there are some great videos and tests done by people with like concerns. They showed them to work just fine and they could only get the plate to fail where the hook attaches vs. pulling it off the intake, and it was at forces way past the weight of the engine/trans combo being pulled.

The carb plates work fine, but honestly I'd have gone with a leveler instead of a carb plate. The leveler allows you to adjust the angle of the engine while you're installing or removing and makes things much easier.

I have found that using a leveler hooked up like in the photo works best, much easier to angle the engine into the bay.

Stronger bolts won't help. Aren't those 5/16". Even a grade 2, 1/4-20 bolt has a tensile strength of 2,350 pounds - that's for ONE bolt. I would be more concerned about the strength of the threads in the manifold. But from all the people who use that method I doubt you should be concerned at all.

I use a setup more like Creaky's (except using the horizontal tapped holes in the ends of the heads) so I can use a leveler. But I have also done it without a leveler more times than with one.

Also, aren't those bolts at the corners that Creaky is using also 5/16"?

Thanks everybody for the responses...much appreciated.

I'll give it a go with my lift plate and let you know the results.

I have never used a leveler. I have one that came with my engine hoist but I never found a good way to anchor it. now I see how it is supposed to be used lol. I have used the carb lift plate many times. and it is easy. frankly it is very easy for me to just grab the waterpump snout and use it to tilt the engine however I want. even with the transmission on it. I think the leveler would probably be a good tool though. maybe I will try using it next time lol.

that's a great pic Lizer. I am sure I can make it work lol. you know how it is, you get used to doing something one way and so you don't even think about it anymore.
