So I'm starting to worry that something is wrong with my new car :(

Just wondering if you guys with v6 3.31 2011's could chip in and let me know what your computer is telling you your average fuel consumption is?

Right now I'm getting 15MPG in the city and the best I saw on the highway was 26MPG

//edit after doing some searching, from what I found it appears down shifting reduces fuel economy? is this true? Since I got the car I have been learning how to downshift properly, and almost every time I slow to come to a stop I downshift, only mildly applying the breaks or not at all until the very end when I have to stop. Could this be causing any drastic effect on my numbers?

someone correct me if I am wrong, but if you are downshift to slow the car down instead of using the brakes doesnt that hurt fuel economy and the engine? I would say put it in neutral as you slow down and shift to the approriate gear as needed.

The V6 and V8 have an aggressive decelleration fuel cut off so no fuel is being injected when you are decellerating as long as your foot is off the gas...I'd think that would make it not affect fuel economy anymore.

Using the engine for breaking puts different stress on it than acceleration, but the engines are designed to put up with quite a few different driving styles. Only time I've heard of it being an absaolute no no is if the engine has aluminum rods.

i get 22mpg in my 2005 v6 5 speed, in town. but i drive at like 40 mph in 5th gear so my revs are mostly about 1200....no engine brake either, i put her in neutral and coast with brakes to a stop. about 27 on the highway

Let's put this in perspective. You say you get 26mpg on the highway. That is pretty dang good, especially for a new car that likely isn't completely broken in. The higher geals will shave a few mpg. But, in my experience, even the econo boxes that advertise 35mpg only get around 31-32 in reality.

I'm sort of happy with the 26mpg highway, its the 15mpg in the city that I'm worried about. I think I've read a few 5.0 guys say that's what their getting in the city too! :(

With 560 miles on my 6 with 3.31s i am averaging 22-24mpg primarley high way with 5 stop lights in city. Sure hope it gets better. I am currently running on 91. In the oweners manuel ford recommends 87 or was it 89? Anyway, running 91 should help correct?

The other thing i was wondering about...

I am currentley in the break in period for the car. If i am running on 91 octane affect my performance down the road if i switch to 87?

from what I read there is NO point in running higher octane, it offers no performance advantages and it just wastes your money. The 5.0 apparently has adaptive tuning I believe its called, where it will detect and change the performance based on the octane level of the gas.

I highly recommend you stick with regular in your V6.
