I just had dual exhaust installed on my '97 convertible. I wanted the duals just for the look, but the bonus surprise is the great new exhaust sound. Interestingly enough, the factory exhaust was already half way to being true dual; the muffler shop was going to install a "Y" in the single line and split into 2, but when he got the car up on the lift, he discovered that there were already 2 cats and 2 separate pipes which the factory tied back into a single exhaust, through a single muffler and out the back of the car. He installed 2 turbo mufflers and 2 chrome tips for a true dual exhaust. The shop specializes in custom street rods and custom mufflers, it cost a little over $400 and I think it was worth it.
that setup from the factory is standard. All mustangs have 2 cats and 2 resignators (sp??) then the go back into a Y then through there single exhaust through a muffler and out the tail end.
