Was challenged by a Civic SI..

Okay, I stopped at one of the local waterholes for a drink after work.. No parking at the spot, so parked like a VIP with 2 wheels on the curb. (Which is quite normal and everyone uses that spot)

There was this guy that started a conversation and kept asking me questions about the car. Some of the conversations

CivicGuy: Is it manual? I heard the new autos are faster?
Me: Depends on the driver

CG: Have you ever driven a Civic SI?
Me: No, I drove a regular civic.

CG: Man, SI's are fast. These cars are taking down Mustangs at the strips.
Me: Maybe, I dont know. Do you have any numbers for 1/4th or 1/8th?
CG: I dont remember them over the top of my head, but I have seen many mustangs left in dust
(I knew where this was going. So I kept my responses to a minimum to avoid the guy)

CG: Naw man, really. My car is completely stock and its FAST! I can prolly take you down.
Me: Maybe, but I don't street race.

CG: I can do donuts effortlessly. And if I take the traction control off, I can do burnouts
Me: Yeah I can do that too.

CG: You wanna race ? I know this street man. We can do it now, its safe.
Me: Like I said before, I don't street race.

CG: DO you wanna drive my car then?
Me: Naw I had a drink already. I dont wanna drive YOUR car when I am drinking.

CG: Okay, Ill drive, you ride with me. Ill show you how fast it is.
Me: Okay lemme finish this drink
(I knew he wouldnt let go of it. SO I took a ride with him.)

Took me to 2 streets over which is unpopulated dead end road and redlined 1 through 3. Did it feel FAST? YES. But did it feel as good as my stang? NO.

I was watching his RPMS and shifts carefully. I was pleasently surprised with the boost that kicked in after around 6K RPMS. And it was more surprising that the redline is actually at 10K

After I got off the car, I said, "yeah its a good ride" and went in. He followed me around telling me stories of how he beat bunch of other cars in many other occasions etc etc..

You guys have no clue how hard I was trying not to laugh!!:grinroll::grinroll: He apparently hangs out at this one place. I am going back every week for some grins..

Year/Mods on the Si?

I'm a native Honda guy so I can probably ballpark how fast it is.
10K revs? Did it sound like you were riding in an angry bee hive?

:shigrin

It sure as hell isn't stock if he's revving to 10k.

He said it was stock and actually looked like it too. I think he said its a 2009.

I dont honestly care how fast his car is or if he can actually beat me.
He wants approval that his car is fast. Thats the stupid part.. (also the funny part)

A stock Si of that generation will be lucky to break 14's. I had a 2008 and while the "kick" at around 6k rpm's feels and sounds dramatic, it's not terribly fast. Even my V6 Mustang will murder that car.

Invite him to the track and show him the difference between 8.5lbs/hp (you) and 15lbs/hp (him). :)
How was the Civic able to rev up to 10K rpms when the tachometer max's out at 9K? BrownSugah...did you have more than one drink? :winks :gringreen

If he's running K-Pro, he could have a higher redline. Though, if the car is stock, the K20 only goes to like 8,300.

Last time I went Autocrossing there was a guy in his 30's with a red SI, late 2000's I think. He did well, and the thing sounded pretty damn good, actually. I asked and he said it was the stock exhaust. It actually had a nice throaty sound.

I had a Civic DX. It sucked ass. Unless you get an SI they are very slow cars. But I was able to get around 40mpg. But my 2012 Focus gets that plus has balls :) You would need an SI to keep up with a STOCK 2012+ Focus. Go Ford!

Hmm... Ill check again next week when I see the guy. I surely thought it was 10K but I have my doubts now. Mind that, I was observing a bunch of stuff in a car I have no clue about, all the while praying he is a good driver :D

But he said it was stock everything. Isnt the Kpro a ECU kit of some sort? The gauges didnt look custom but maybe they are..

People lie about mods all the time. Yes, K-Pro is an ECU program. There's the "reflash" and full K-Pro. You'd never know it's there unless you had some sort of dealer diagnostic tool. Similar to finding a tune on a Mustang.

I've seen plenty of Hondas rev past the stock tach numbers, it's hilarious.

Used to have a SI as a run about for work for a little while, I think it was somewhere between a '08 and a '10, it ran alright, the vtec was definitely dramatic and seemed fast when ya stood on it about 6k or whatever. I think it was the different noise that made it seem faster than what it was. No way could a stock one keep up with a 5.0... I dont think they could run with a new V6 either

Not going to start a war, but those cars can do mid-high 14's stock. I had a 2010 SI, I would know. Also, they can do high 13's with VERY little mods.

Either way, for what the car is, it's a blast. It's quick and is one of the best handling FWD cars you can buy. Not to mention, the last of it's breed with such a high-revving engine. It was a fantastic drivers car.

Back on topic, though...that guy you met must have been a complete jackass. No matter what kind of car you have...that's just a stupid way to start and continue a conversation, Haha.

Over 6k RPM, isn't that Vtec kicks in?? I heard once Vtec kicks in, no car can catch up to it. VTEC KICKS IN YOOOOOOOO!!

I'd have to agree. There are some fast imports out there. I know a few guys that build Hondas ans Subarus that are pretty quick. Its is shocking how much power they can get out of those little motors. Now that being said I hate 4 banger coffee can cars. It's cool if those guys dig em just not for me. Like I say to my import friends" I don't care if it runs 10s, it's still a Honda".

I say good for him for having a car he's proud of, and not ricing the crap out of it.

Also, good for you for not giving in and racing him. Keep us posted on the future experiences :bigthumbsup
Fart...ah excuse me, I had rice for dinner.
I had an '08 Si coupe and an '11 Si coupe.

The redline is "8,000 RPM", although it doesn't start bouncing off the rev limiter until 8,200. Sometimes people will argue it revs higher than 8,200 because the needle has a lot of inertia and will bounce up to 8,500+, but that's not really the engine revs.

My '13 V6 vert auto will roast either of my old Si coupes. However, the Si is a more sporty ride and I can do some much more impressive driving with one. I'd say a really good driver on curvy roads in an Si could take a V6 stang with a regular driver. I'd bet that I could anyway. Straightaways, no way.
