Ways to gain power from a 2V

Okay guys, I'm 16 and I love my first car, which is an 02' Mustang GT. What I do not love is racing with my friend's 2013 buick and barely beating him. Its a buick!!! I know how fast new cars can be these days but come on!! I need some suggestions on how I can get the power up for my stang. Now, what I have as of right now is a fresh engine, probably with less than 2000 total miles on it. How I got it is a long story... But yeah the engine is fresh. I also have flowmaster exhaust, and a k&n air intake kit on it. I am guessing that I'm getting around 260WHP at the moment with just those mods. I would like to get it up to 300 in the near future. And keep in mind that I am dumping all of my money (Minimum wage job) into this so slapping a supercharger on it is out of the question :) So guys, what are some cheap ways I can get it up to 300whp? What I have in mind is maybe getting some underdrive pulleys, a 70mm throttle body, and maybe even headers, although I know those aren't the cheapest (for me atleast). Thanks guys!!:)

Well, for starters, you aren't making 260 to the wheels...maybe 230...see my signature...without my tune and UDPs I was making 240 to the wheels on the stock tune. I'm now maybe 250whp...that's being generous...

Secondly the first thing you should do is gears and a tuner. I recommend 4.10s.

Then good tires...

What's your budget? Can you do your own work? Getting to 300 to the wheels in our engines (without forced induction) is quite expensive...so you may need to rethink your goals.

I agree with JohnR your best bet in your situation is gears. If you can get a gear/tuner combo that would really help you out.

Oh okay I see, Man I didn't know that It was such a big challenge to get it up to 300. Clearly I was wrong about the horsepower figure as well, sorry about that I am pretty new to all of this. Maybe I should shoot for something like 250 - 260rwhp? I have brand new Goodyear tires on some 9x17 rims, so the tires should be good. So say I got a tuner for my car, and tuned it the best I could, (or have someone tune it for me), get a 70mm throttle body, and under drive pulleys.. Then what do you guys think I would be looking at? Thanks guys for the quick responses!

Also my budget is as cheap as possible. So nothing too fancy, just enough to get the job done. I can also do my own work, my grandpa can help (he used to rebuild and drag race stangs)
Considering your budget, I recommend an aftermarket plenum, tuner, and UDPs will be fine. Be sure to buy the Steeda UDPs...no other brand. Also look into a midpipe...with all those mods you should be at or maybe a bit above 250w assuming get a tune. Just get a tuner from AM and they will have 3 custom tunes written for your car accounting for your mods. The tuner will be the greatest expense.

Look for used parts...I see used parts for our cars all the time on Craigslist.

Is your car an auto or stick?

I highly recommend rear gears. They don't add power, but they put the power that you do have down faster.
That and a tune will make your car feel a LOT quicker.

Hey Da,

I know exactly how you feel! My first Mustang was a 2004 GT and I absolutely loved it but it definitely did lack in the power department in stock form.

I would go along the lines of what others have said and go straight for a Ford Racing 4.10 Gears and BAMA X4 Tuner kit. This will really wake your car up and you will notice you pulling on that Buick more and more.

If you wanted to do these one at a time, start with the tuner, and then go for the gears as you will need to re-tune your car after the gear install.

Luckily, BAMA provides you with free tunes for life so you will be able to re-tune for them at no cost!

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions!

Tuner, gears, throttle body, headers, and a h or x-pipe would be great. I know how you feel with wanting more power out of the car. I love the 99-04 body style but really hate the fact that the GT is weak in power stock form. I have alot of time and money in my car and am hoping to lay down well over 400 rwhp without turbos or a supercharger. Getting it dyno tuned March 10th.

300whp isnt as ez as alot of people think. I would start with a full exhaust with longtub headers, gears, tune, 150 shot and u will have a pretty tite ride
You have to chrome everything you can under the hood and get chrome wheels , here's mine . No , seriously , gears and tuner first . Gears don't add hp but they do multiply torque that's why the butt dyno feels the immediate hit .
