I was putting BBK 1-5/8" shorty headers on my car yesterday  And as I was putting the head gaskets on I noticed my heads are painted blue. Is this correct coloring for stock heads or could they be aftermarket. If so and you know what types of heads they are like gt-40p etc... and you know casting numbers and where to find them please share. Thank You!!! :worship

I'm the original owner of my 1989, and the heads were the same color as the block.. light gray.
3 lines on the front of the heads are gt40. 4 lines are gt40p's.

sometimes the bars are hard to see becasue of the accessory brackets. if u can't see them then look at plug #1 and there should be a "GT" or "GTP" cast next to the number one plug... the same with number eight... if they are GT or GTP heads... if not most casting numbers are on top of the heads.. there are a few however that are on the bottom of the heads. hopes this helps
Ford engines were light gray in 1989. Someone's done some fiddling under the hood. That doesn't mean they can't be stock heads though, a lot of people stick with Ford blue on their engines.
+1^^^^^^^^ If they ar enot aftermarket that is a good sign your motor has been rebuilt.
I know that people stick with ford blue alot but just the heads are blue not the block thats still grey.

Sounds like your heads could have been changed then.
Thats what im thinking is possible. Because the car does have a different cam which i believe is an e303. But the throttle body, and intake(down to the plastic fenderwell part) are all stock, and the mass air is stock too. Im gonna take a look at the car tomorrow after school and ill try to snap some pics close up of the heads for you guys to give me an opinion on them.
How would you know if there is a cam in it? Plus if everything else is stock the heads were probably rebuilt at some shop and painted blue.
I know theres a Cam in it because the car was owned by my cousin at first. But he doesnt listen for specific details because he bought the car jus tto drive and then re-sell and I haven't been able to find him since I bought the car because he moved. And there was also another owner of the car between him and the original owner. All my cousin knew about the car was that it had an O/R H-Pipe, flowmasters, smog pump removed and a Cam.

Very questionable based on what your cousin knew/didn't know.....

There is no mention of headers which tends to make me believe it is basically stock......

AKA no cam or aftermarket heads.......
yeah the car was pieced together very wierdly. it has a flowmaster catback and o/r h-pipe. then it has these blue heads that i noticed when i put the bbk headers on. it was repainted has a gt wing instead of lx ,had pony wheels, it has 373 gears. and a cop owned it at onew point and did the work. it idles when warmed up at around 950-1000rpms but it doesnt sound like a stock idle. so idk as i go along with this project i got somer stuff to look over on it
This is one of the most valuable tools for the 5.0 owner. Actually found it on this site somewhere.

Keep a copy in my pocket when I'm headed to the salvage yard.:)

Good chart but there are some minor errors and/or omissions.

'79-'84 (and '85 w/ CFI) = D8OE
'85 (w/ 4V) = E5AE
'85-'86 truck = E5TE
'86 = E6SE
the easiest way to settle if there has been any head work done is prolly to take the valve covers off and take a peek... then run the number u see under there. that would give u a pretty good idea of what;s going on as far as rocker ratio and valve spring set up.
