A 3.73 gear means the driveshaft spings 3.73 times for every axle rotation. 3.55s mean it spins 3.55 times for every axle rotation. The steeper the gear the quicker the acceleration since you're spinning the driveshaft faster.

How much mpg would you lose going from 3.31 or 3.55 to 3.73? and how much will that hurt top speed?

You'll lose like maybe 2mpg (depending on how you drive it). And top speed might be cut to like 125-130mph, but who cares about top speed, its all about 1/4 miles times.

Top speed will not be affected. Your car could never achieve the theoretical top speed anyway. For example, my theoretical top speed with 3.55s is 222 and 192 with 4.10s. I'm not too worried about losing those 30 mph. :)

People choose 3.73's as a good all around gear. 4.10's are great for people who have a car they take to the drags often or just want to straight out have off line acceleration. I chose 3.73's because I drive a lot on the freeway and the rpms for me rev a bit high. If you want a compromise between 3.73's and 4.10's, get 3.90's.

Also as you get more horsepower, like from a supercharger, cai, dual exhaust, tuners. Is there anything else you will need to get or anything to suport the horsepower or whatever.
