Steve McQueen starred in a 1968 cop film called "Bullitt" where he drove a fastback, hunter green colored Mustang. The movie gained high popularity due to its car chase which featured this high-powered Mustang. In 2001, Ford attempted to relive its glory from this movie by making a few limited edition Bullitt mustangs. This car, in 2001, had a few upgrades from the GT's such as a new intake design, lower to the ground suspension of about 3/4 in., and advanced upper drive pulleys.

Basically, this car was a beefed up version of the GT, and only offered in a hunter green color, black, or true blue. But very few true blue mustangs exist. The majority bullitts came in this dark, highland green color.

Ford continued this tradition of making bullitts again in the 08-09 range. They, too, had upgrades from the GT's. These cars are rare, but unless you get one in mint condition, I really don't think it'll be a car that will appreciate in value like the 2000 Cobra-R will.

Its just a specialty mustang. Similar to the mach 1 or cobra R. They gave it a more retro look, with a different seat pattern, retro font gauges, and (i believe) various aluminum components throughout the interior. And the rest is just as 2000ATIM said. In my opinion, the s197 bullitts look more authentic to the original fastback, so therefore are more collectible. But a true blue new edge would be incredible.

No, the 2001's are more collectible, simply because of the history that went into making it from Ford (It should have never made it to the showroom, to be honest), and there's less 2001's than 08-09's.

Not really. It has the 2V and shares certain body parts, but it's got more balls than a standard GT, handles better, has 13" brakes, much better interior and gauges and different body trim panels.

Here's a good link to show the differences between the Bullitt and GT. As you can see, pretty much nothing but the longblock went untouched, and while the changes are subtle, if you drive a GT and then a Bullitt, the difference in the way the car drives and feels is substantial.

Didn't ford at first say the bullitt was rated at 265, due to the intake (which was a great design) but later said it was more like 280 or 285?

And talking to a few of the old Ford execs, there's a reason why they were rated lower. There's no way to tell if it's a Bullitt by the VIN #, a slight oversight (maybe), so if they would have rated them at 275, that puts them into the same insurance category as the Cobra. So since there was no way to differentiate between the GT and Bullitt by VIN, and obviously GT owners wouldn't have been happy to pay Cobra insurance rates, Ford flubbed the ratings and backed it down to 265 to keep it under the cutoff.

I'm sure the 1996 Cobra horsepower debacle was still fresh in their minds as well, and they'd rather underrate than overrate and go through that mess again.

A bone stock Bullitt will typically dyno between 235-240rwhp.
