I want a radar detector for Christmas because I have not used one for years and need a new one.

What are currently good radar detectors from the $100 to $225 range?

Also any good cordless ones?

Your not gonna get a good one in that range... Valentine and Escort are the best ones. You should look into laser jammers too. You can look for used ones on craigslist

If you want a good one you will need to bump your price range up closer to $500. Then get one of the ones listed by Tim.

I guess I disagree with all the other posters. Try these 995's and 940's : Beltronics Radar Detectors :: Performance Rules

The only ticket I've received was when I didn't believe it. Need a stun gun option to shoot and disable your right leg.. My last one saved me about 8 tickets. The new one for the Mustang hasn't really saved me yet but it will.

I have no doubt that the other detectors might be better, but these are good cost effective ones that work.

I paid 270.00 for my Escort 8500 on Amazon. Definitely out performs my previous Whistler and Cobra detectors.

Escort 8500 x50, or 9500i

or

Valentine 1.

If you cannot afford one of these (new/used), drive like a granny and save your pennies until you can.

I don't really need a jammer because I don't drive on the highway much, and here in stl area most of the police use standard radar unless you're on the highway then i see lots of laser.

California Laser Jammer Laws - Guys of LIDAR

You sir are wrong. In some states, it is a pretty hefty ticket, and if you get caught with one, be prepared to pay 1/3 of what the cars worth
That's in California. Not everywhere else.

The matter of laser jammers/radar detectors is a STATE controlled issue. Here in Georgia, there are no laws whatsoever. The only jammer you can't use is a radar jammer, they are federally controlled.

in california they'd arrest you for picking ur nose while driving (exaggeration of course)... crazy ass state. Funny thing is the people put up with it/welcome it. :smh:

In FL, and GA (farthest my car has gone outta FL) --- I'm fine :)

But i did stand corrected, more states have adopted laws against it... wasn't many that did back when i first got my ZR4.

Instant on killed this debate years ago... then laser killed it even more.

8500 or higher will tell you when you've been caught. Mine goes off and tells me pretty accurately when I've been lit up. The truth is, it's too late by then. If you are in a really hick place you might have better odds, but laser guns are so much cheaper now, even the almost dead towns can afford them now.

A laser jammer is your best bet and they do work well with the 8500's and up. Lots of people in the "other club" have had this combination work well for them, but will not officially admit this.

Keep in mind that anything on your dash will make your car a higher target for those who think they are worth a lot. Built in and covert is the way to go.. not just for the cops but for the losers who break into cars.

If you're on the highway it at least lets you know, maybe enough time to floor it and get away before they come after you.

If their lights are not on they can't pull you over. As soon as you see them you better or you're going to jail!

I'll let the water pour its own way through this bucket of reasoning on its own.

I wish you luck sir. :bigthumbsup

i guess it all depends on where you live and the way the local highway patrol catch their speeders.

Here in FL, they are almost always using KA, and I usually get a good mile if not more warning.

Since i've had my 8500 x50, (going on close to 8 years now) - I have only gotten 2 tickets, both as a result of laser guns.

After that second one I finally said enough was enough with that noise, and bought the ZR4 shifter which works in conjunction with the 8500 x50. Ever since that, I've seen the laser warning go nuts 2x, both times with the cop still pointing the gun at the car as I passed him, which of course by then i was able to slow down enough. It clearly did the job. So way I see it the ZR4 paid for itself at least 2x now.

I'm not saying im impervious... of course its still a risk you take, but I dont do stupid stuff anymore the way I did back in highschool.

Its when these super troopers think they're saving the world by pulling me over for doing 80 - 85, in a 70 at 12 midnight on a completely empty highway that this combo gives at least some piece of mind.
