All Mustang IIs had 8" rear-ends, with gears ranging from 2.79:1 all the way up to 3.55 to one depending on year and options. In various years Posi-Lock was available on 3.00, 3.40, and 3.55 rear gear cars.
My 74 Mustang II with a four cylinder did not have an 8 inch rear axle but had a 7.5. This axle does not have the third member housing that can be removed as a unit but instead had a rearend cover that had to be removed for access to the differential. I think it was the same rearend offered in Pintos. Since I put in a V8, I changed axle housing to an 8 inch from a 75 to 78 Mustang II. 74 was the first year for the Mustang II and was only offered in the US with a four or six cylinder engines. The six cylinder might have had an 8 inch rear axle but I am not sure.

Hmm... not the first time I've heard that. I was just quoting MustangII.net's tech section above, I know mine's got a 3.55:1 8" (never verified if it was posi or not)
if your going to put gears why not just put in the 8' gears would be easier to get and its a better rearend
Im im MustangII.net also, did the tag decoder, and it says i have a 6.25 rear end. Just what my thing tag says, and its a 2.3l
your right the 2.3L came with the 6.25 its whats in my car right now im convering to an 8 with 4:62 gear the 2.3 only came with the 8 if it was a personal option so most have the small rear end and if your going to put power behind it get rid of the small rear and go 8
the small powered Mustang II's didn't get an 8" til 77.78.when it got a 302.
