What kind of Valve springs for my setup....?

3957 Views 9 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  chc_1989
I have a 1992 mustang gt. I'm planning on putting an E-303 cam in it. Along with new heads, either GT40, GT40p, or i might even have my e7 heads ported and polished, and 1.7 crane roller rockers. My question is what kind of valves springs should i buy. Or do the gt40 and the gt40p stock valve springs ok for the E303 cam and the 1.7 crane roller rockers? Hoping to hear every ones response!!

Thanks in advance,

Use the size springs that the cam card recommends! If anything maybe a "tad" stronger but nothing less. Less is valve float and more can cause valvetrain/ valve seat damage. When I mentioned more this is if your going to be revving the snot out of what you have.

You know, that isn't a bad idea. I took the liberty of looking it up, here: SMALL BLOCK V-8 HYDRAULIC ROLLER TAPPET CAMSHAFTS

It reads:

FRPP tech notes said:
Valve spring requirements: 120 lbs valve seat pressure minimum 295 lbs open.
The FRPP springs they recommend, these, are expensive for what they are (who'da thunk? ;)). You can get other valve spring kits for considerably less. I've been using a rule of thumb that for HR 5.0/5.8 engines 130-150 lb. seat pressure and 300+ lb. open.

Definitely not! Any of these will work:

Crane Valve Spring and Retainer Kits 44308-1

Trick Flow® Valve Spring Upgrade Kits TFS-2500100

SB FORD, GT40 DROP IN VALVE SPRING KIT, HYD ROLLER

I haven't used any of those exact springs, but I've used similar.

Pete pretty much has you covered.

Also decide what heads you are finally going to go with. I would rather save money and use GT40's than spend extra to port junkie stock E7's.

It all comes down to budget as when you start dropping $400 to $500 on a set of iron heads it reached the boundaries of used aluminum heads. You can find used aluminum heads out there for $700.

I will more then likely be going with gt40's. When looking at that chart i see that the cam has a .498 lift. So when buying new valve spring kits make sure they can handle the lift of .498? I'm fixing her up to drive and occasionaly race for short sprints like racing a honda or another mustang or even another sports car, wen i get the itch. lol And sometimes going to the drag strip. I say this because early "fast93stang" you mentioned about going over a "tad" bit. with this new information, wat would you gettlemen reccomend if i go with e303, gt40's and 1.7 crane roller rockers.

I more then likely wont constantly be reving and race every light: having the throttle wide open like a dragster, but if i do i just want to make sure i wont ruin my heads, cam, motor stuff like that.

Thank you,

An E303 will produce 0.498 in. of net valve lift with 1.6 rockers. If you use 1.7 rockers the net valve lift will be 0.529 in. I linked you to three valve spring kits which will work for you... I guess you didn't like those? Well, good luck.
