I would say 10w30 from what I have read on the post and such but 10w40 is the highest you should ever go in that motor

10w30 in all except the warmest climates, then 10w40 (only 10w40 in areas where you're regularly going to see 100 degree temps).

Anything heavier can actually snap the oil pump shaft in a 2.3
10w30 for sure dont go any heavier in your location
The old oil debate!!!!!! Well most of you answers are verry good. But the one about the DIZZY is most accurate. The 2.3 FORD has a nasty habit of eating DIZZY drives. So a light fast moving oil is mandatory. I say 10W30. Now this is a winter oil you know so its not really good in hot climates like florida. So a better oil would be 15W40. . The other factor is what cam does the engine HAVE. ROLLER SLIDER ETC. Roller units do not need ZYNC. Sliders do. So an additive is needed in slider applications?? But remenber this the wider the spread on VI improvers the less oil in the CAN. Example 10W50 compaired to 10W 30. 10W30 has much more oil than 10W50. So the best choice i an oil with a 2 step rating and no more. Many engines suffered sereyous sludging with 10W40 oils years ago. so be it as it may always warm up a 2.3 Ford before driving it and use a 10W30 motor oil in it unless you live in a hot year round climate. If you do then use a 15W40 TOM
