What type of carburetor do you use and why?

I have a an old Holley 4160 carb which needs some work.. I plan on trying to rebuild it over the winter. I've never done this before but I'll give it a try.
I have a mildly built 289. Just built and just broken in with 628 miles on it now. But the carb is not snappy enough. The secondaries seem to take for ever to come on or there's a real dead spot and then the kick of them coming on.
I thought I wanted a 570 street avenger but was told it could be a little lazy as it's still a vacuum secondary carb. I was guided to a 600cfm double pumper. So I'm seriously considering that.

Holley 1406, love it. Also sitting on a mild 302, only problem I had is a screw inside backed out an locked out the float an just poured gas everywhere an car wouldn't run, got it home tore it down an fixed it :
I'm trying to find the 1406 on the Holley site. What is it? A double pumper?

Maybe he was referring to the edelbrock 1406. Which is what I have 600 cfm electric choke.
I perfer holley but I am running a 625 Street Demon on a stroked 351C.
I run a 480cfm Autolite on my '65. (I assume you aren't interested in my 2-barrel.) I love the simplicity, reliability, and ease of maintenance. It's plenty snappy, provides all the power I need to get tickets, and the valves will start to float before it runs out of breath. I like the vacuum secondaries because they open when I need them, rather than just popping open every time I mash the gas.

Autolite 4100 4b on a 289v8, the carb had the secondaries closed by my father for as long as i can remember i once opened them to check the performance and feel it was waaaay to wild for me:nono:, my mom and my girlfriend said it was like it was going to take off:gringreen so i shut them off again and had it fine tuned by and old guy who set it just right to work as a high performance 2b. More than enough for me nowdays :bigthumbsup

I heard those old autolites were and are still the best.
I have to have all four barrels operating. That is an absolute. I'd actually like them to come into play sooner. But the double pumper has got to be bad on gas. Doesn't it? Not that I care that much but there is a limit.

Hi Joe. Have you done any work on the carb? have you adjusted the vacuum spring or anything like that? And as an aside do you notice any difference between the C4 and FMX?

the 1406 IS an edelbrock. and the perfect bolt on and go carb for a stock/near stock 289/302.
I have run the edelbrock 1706 ( 750cfm) on my 5.0L for 7 years with no problems or adjustments. I dont even use the manual choke. It dont have no hesitation or bog like I had with all my Holleys.
I meant a 1407 not 1706 sorry had a brain fart.
The only real work I've needed to do is change the needles and seats because something was causing the viton tips to swell and stick open. Other than that, just routine adjustment. (Mostly to the choke.)

Both the C4 and FMX work well for me, but the C4 shifts are crisper and it downshifts much more easily. The FMX likes to get in 3rd quickly and stay there - doesn't seem to want to spend much time in 1st or 2nd, despite adjusting the modulator.

Haha I was ordering parts for an Edelbrock 1406 I got in the shop when I typed that. I run a 4160 holley single pumper. Works great besides that one issue
I use an Edelbrock 1405 on my '66 289. I chose it because I find Edelbrock carbs fairly easy to use, and the 500 CFM seemed about right for a 289.

im using a 625cfm demon on a mild 289 had the same problem just kept tuning on it new lighter springs now comes in quickly good carb just needed tobe tuned to my engine. first i started with the floats making sure they are where they are supposed to be. right out of box not even close. kits are easy to get. hope that helps.

Hey Manitario how does the 1405 work? And its been a while since I driven up there. Are there some good twisty country roads?

Those Demons have no choke, is that right? What colour spring did you end up with?

Edelbrock 1405 here. It's been on the car for over 4 years and I've never had to do anything to it. Runs great never bogs down. I rarely have to use the manual choke in summer, only on cold mornings in the winter.
I had a 500 edelbrock, thought it was the best carburetor for my little 302 then I put a 600 holley with a lighter spring.

Needless to say the edelbrock is nothing more than a paperweight now:)
