i would go with a 347 stroker longblock with a good h/c/i combo.
First you'll want to start with a good suspension. Because 500HP + stock suspension= nothing but a cool burnout.

Then start with an aftermarket block. Stroke to 347, some high flowing heads and intake, and a custom grind cam. :bigthumbsup
If its a low mileage 302 a h/c/i and strim supercharger will get you their. If motor is high mileage a rebuild would be good 306,331,347 and strim. Then you need suspension work to hook,a better tranny, and the list goes on and on. Many of us have been down this road. To build it correct you need deep pockets. If the car run fine now enjoy it a little before you start modding.:bigthumbsup
Vortech s trim 8# pulley or turbo. good H/C/I setup bigger inj 255 high pressure pump, methanol inj or bigger inj for e85 if you have locally.

he will need an aftermarket block if hes looking for 500hp. 500hp is the limit before a stock 302 block cracks. IMO, i wouldnt even want to push my luck with over 300hp at the wheels on a stock block.

I forgot to mention suspension also. before you can go for your 500hp goal, you will need a completely new aftermarket suspension. without it, you will do nothing but spin the tires.
thx guys thought about a supercharger, what do you all think of a twin turbo kit, what would that put me at about?

All depends on what turbos you get and how much boost you run.

Either way, your best bet with the engine is to start with an aftermarket block. You may get away with 500hp for a little while on a stock block, but it will come back to haunt you. A kid at work always bragged that his made 550hp over my cars mid 300s. Now I'm driving mine daily and his sits in the garage with a cracked block.

From there get a good forged rotating assembly and then a HCI combo. This will give you a good, solid engine to put a supercharger, turbo, or nitrous on.

Then you just need a car that can put that to the pavement.

500 is a lot of power and you could EASILY put $10-20k into it.
whats hci? how much is just a block roughly, sry new to this
h/c/i means heads, cam , intake

If you have to ask that question you are not ready for 500 HP at the wheels or crank........
A block that can handle over 500hp would be a 351 (600 max) dss 302 or dart block. 351 is cheap but the dss and dart start at $2k. The stock block is good to 500 hp so your choice.
Stock blocks can handle 300rwhp no problem. I will agree around 500rwhp you are pushing you luck. I have been at 454rwhp for a while now and car is tuned well. May last may not.
How much money do you have is the question as I am sure we can all blow 50k in one day.
