So, even a big retailer like Summit has timing sets from $35 up to $160. Where is the difference? Materials? Balance? If I'm building a 347, is there something I should be looking for?

I've always heard good things about Cloyes, but why such a huge spread in price? I see a couple Cloyes sets for under $100, and then one for $130. Same manufacturer. What's the deal?

The difference between the high priced one
and the lower is, the higher priced one uses
hardened billet steel while the lower priced
ones are cast. That means they were poured
in a mold not cut from a block of steel and
CNC'd to specs and then hardened. I am
comparing the 35 dollar set to the 160 set.
They probably throw in a higher quality chain
in the more expensive set also.

Agree ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

If you are stock or near stock, or not going to exceed the oem redline with mods, the cast gears are fine!

I see that, now. I've been reading a lot of manufacturers' websites, lately. Seems like all the ads are telling me I need top-fuel dragster level parts. Go figure.

I appreciate the advice and insight. I'm building a 347, but I won't be on the track much, at all. Ya'll are saving me a ton of money. After reading as deeply as I can, and advice from a bunch of guys, I think I need to spend the money on a true-roller single chain set up. Thanks to everyone.
