Straight pipes to my understanding means there nothing on the exhaust past headers its just "straight pipe". So no clearance issues and you can do it in your driveway just cut everything off. Not a good idea tho for obvious reasons you can just change out the muffler if you like or even put glass packs or remove it all together but leave your cats if your getting inspected and make sure whatever you decide the exhaust is routed away from the car and not melting anything

No problem at all with clearance, nothing to be gained by doing it. Against federal law to remove the cats so no muffler shop will/should do it. You want it loud, get different mufflers.

Its not against the federal law....the law varies state to state...like I am from Ohio and we do not have to have cats.

i live in one of the strickest states ny so i am sure you need cats here.
Why don't you just take the car to an exhaust shop and let them custom make your pipes. It may be cheaper in the long run.
Sounds like your just looking for sound so now we can help ! Straight pipes is such a specific question but if its sound your looking for there are many options.

02 shaker has it right it may be cheaper in the long run to get a custom setup but just because its "custom" doesn't have to make it expensive your not the first mustang to put on a new muffler and you won't be the last and I bet any shop you go to knows a thing or two about exhaust for your car so go there talk to them talk prices and see if you guys can agree on something. Probably just new mufflers would give you the result your looking for and that can be done right for under $100

In my opinion, strait pipes will be obnoxiously loud and will not have a good tone at all. It will sound like the typical "gray primered ******* truck". If money allows, install a new midpipe with or without converters, and a good catback system. Believe it or not, just changing the mid pipe, even if it has a single hi flow converter, will make the world of difference in sound and power. The factory midpipe is the most restrictive thing on the car as well as sound deadening.

In your case, since the laws in your state are strict with cats, get a new catted midpipe (like what UPR sells)to stay legal, then get an SLP LM1 or LM2 catback system.

It sure is against the Federal law, just may not be inforced where you are. Also why most shops will not remove them.
