I have a 1987 mustang gt 5.0L 302ci but will bore it out to a 329ci and will be sleeving it. It's almost totally stock so which set up would be best for horsepower and duribility? 3:73 or 4:10? I'm going for the street/race type of build and will eventually make it looks like a stock 93 cobra from the exterior.

Without any info on the car, all you will get with that question is personal opinions.

You posted the same question somewhere else... I remember giving a similar answer.

I'm going to put a T-5 trans in and it's stick. Yea I plan to make it around 500-600 hp eventually if not more

Well 1st lesson for you that T5 isnt going to handle 500 hp plus...and this is a stock 302 block your boring lesson 2 thats not going to handle 500 hp plus either...are you going to use a power adder to get this 500 plus hp?....if so what type?

If you plan on getting the stock 5.0 up to 5-600+ HP you might be ALOT better off just doing a complete engine swap, and just sell the 5.0, could be cheaper, but will save ALOT of trouble. Alot of components will have to be upgraded to handle more power, you are basically going to have to replace a generous 50% of the parts.

Idn I haven't even looked into power adders. What type or set up would you suggest? And how much hp do you think could a t5 trans and bored 302 to a 329 handle?

This thread has so much wrong with it... I really should just step away... but I can't.

First of all, there is absolutely no "best" gear!!! The optimal rear gear depends on the transmission, the tire size, the engine, the power, and above all what the car is used for. I've had three different rear gear ratio gears (four if you count the stock 2.73s), and sometime I really need to change again. Hey, guess what? I have a manual trans and 3.73s are not completely working for me!

Now in exchange for that insight, you really need to humor Mark and I and explain how you plan on making a 329 cubic inch engine. What bore? What stroke? What block do you plan on starting with?

Ya gears are a very subjective issue. There are the 3 'kings' - 3.55's, 3.73's and 4.10's. They are dubbed so because they are the most commonly chosen.

yldpony made some good points. Transmission, tire, engine etc all factor into the choice. IMO, from what you have outlined so far, the biggest factors for you is transmission and a power adder. Tire size plays a role too but I'd say unless you're a hardcore racer (or a perfectionist), you needn't bother to much with this (basically if you're running street tires).

The debate will go on forever. Everyone has their own preference and ultimately that is what it comes down to. At a certain point we are splitting hairs. Read up on the stickied gear thread and then it comes down to a personal choice.

I too am curious how to go about getting 329 cu. Here's a nice table (actually made by YLDPONY) that maybe will help ya out.

I really think the OP needs to start all over as this thread has so much wrong right now.

OP start reading and searching first as we have a civilized but tough crowd here (plus I am in a good mood).

Sorry, if you're racing, going larger than 3.55 gears will greatly reduce your top speed, especially if you're making power. 3.73's and 4.10's are going to stop you between 110-120mph, and if you have power, you'll get to those speeds pretty quick, then just basically do that speed to the finish line. I personally hate it when people just automatically shout out these 2 gears for top end. Although it does greatly depend on transmission gearing also, just take a look, for example, at Ferrari's and Lamborghini's, they have maybe a 2.0:1 gear ratio, and have an excellent top end speed. IMO figure out what kind of power you're going to produce, find your power bands, talk to a racing shop about what transmission will support your motor, and talk to them about what application(s) you want to do with the car, speeds wanted, and the gearing in your transmission, then in your rear end.

Hmmm. How would you come to this conclusion? I currently have 3.73:1 gears and I've personally had my car up to ~125 MPH (on a closed-course race track) in 4th gear! Here is a calculator to play with:

Sorry Kirb you can't compare a Mustang to a Ferrari or a Lamborghini as they are 2 completely different animals and I wouldn't even know where to start. And how much power do you have that you are crossing the line at over 130 mph?
