I have seen alot of talk lately about how the shelby gt500 compares to the new corvette ZR1. I am sick of this discussion because although the gt500 may have similar horsepower to the ZR1, the shelby cannot hang with it. The ZR1 is lighter, bigger engine, better brakes, and MUCH better power/weight ratio. I looked up the prices for each and on autotrader.com a corvette ZR1 goes for $126,000 and a GT500 goes for like $60,000 and under. I wish Ford would put their balls on the line and make a car that would spank corvettes for like $90,000. I know the GT can spank them but they stopped making those and besides they were much more expensive then too...like $250,000 new and now for an 2005 model they are like $180,000. Wouldn't that just be freaking amazing to get a real factory corvette killer...two seater, lighter frame, more aerodynamic, bigger engine (more displacement not just a bigger supercharger), and same price or a little less expensive to ice the cake. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated as the Corvette has been the only thing that they could hang over our heads. They always say crap like "Haha the corvette is better haha it just is haha. No way any ford can touch our corvette haha." Also, what would be this new cars cool new name? :bounce2:

I think it is possible for Ford to do it but we already differ on what we want. I'd rather have smaller displacement and twin turbos. Front mid engine with rear transaxle. Closer to an Aston Martin DB9 than a Corvette would in my opinion open it up to a slightly different audience which I think would be slightly larger than the one for a strictly two seater. Look at the FIA GT1 and GT3 race cars and see how competitive a DB9 is.

The Corvette is a brand name, thus being able to justify a $126,000 price tag. The Mustang doesn't have that image and any other car would be "just a Ford". When you're talking about 6 figure cars, no one is going to buy one without it having a serious reputation for being what it is. The GT-R suffers to this day of being "just a Nissan".

TBH I don't think there's a market for it to be worthwhile to Ford.

To be fair, I don't think many in their right mind would ever compare a GT500 to a ZR1, it just doesn't add up. A gt500 compared to a Corvette Grand Sport is pretty close though, and the GT500 falls just slightly short of the Z06. Zr1 territory it is not...

that 60k price tag is the exact reason why I would take a gt500 over a vette anyday. You may get more power/weight outta the vette, but you get way more power/dollar outta the stang and that extra cash adds up to a bigger s/c, nos, this, that and the other thing.
However, I would like to see an end all be all stang that is so tricked out that it can reverse the rotation of the earth! Send those rear seats for a hike! Make it a mid engine and dare I say it? ALL WHEEL DRIVE! Give it a big ass intercooler and some screaming twin turbos on top of that incredible displacement. Make it lower, make it wider, make the back tires take up more of the rear quarter like the dodge challenger does. Let the rear window slant into the rear end more like a ferrari. Give it a ram air hood and some function side vents.
But to do all this and keep the open, flat grille would be difficult and essentially useless since the engine would be in the back. Unless you made the grille some sort of ram air as well.
Eh just a thought! I'll quite rambling now:bigthumbsup

I agree completely with this! There's a reason that Top Gear US did a segment with the ZR1 vs a 458 Italia (ZR1 had the faster lap). It's much more Super Car than Muscle/Pony Car. Ford would need a new car to actually compete in that class. Maybe that Shelby GR1 concept?

ive always said that its stupid to compare the gt500 to any corvette because they arent in the same ring. ford needs to just start making the GT again just find a way to make it more affordable. i never understood why it was so expensive in the first place because the technology on it WAS NOT that impressive. it was a pretty plain jane car for the playing field it was designed for. a basic, balls to the wall supercharged V8 and a five (maybe six) speed tranny.

Exactly. One of the reasons why they can make the GT500 so cheap is because it's based off the mustang platform and shares many similar components. But at the end of the day, they are limited to what "supercar" things they can do with it since it is what it is. It would be sweet to see Ford make another supercar, like the GT, but you can't expect it's price to be cheap since it will be a niche car without a lot being produced.

Thats what I was talking about...not a mustang variant but a NEW car... and @908ssp, that would be great. I just want Ford to make a DIFFERENT car that could compete with the corvettes and porshes (or however you spell it). A level in between the shelby and a GT. As far as people seeing it as "just another Ford"...whatever the GT is widely recognized as an excellent car as it is a Ford, and the GT-R being "another Nissan" is bull because the GT-R is a great car too....not as good as a Ford though :shigrin. As far as the price point goes, I was thinking $80 to $90 G's not over a $100. If Ford would make this car and do it right, that would relieve the mustangs from all the comparisons of it to the corvette and the like; allowing people to see just how AWESOME this daily driving, fairly priced PONY car is...it just needs a little backup. Like the camaro is never compared to the Ford GT...the Corvette is, so the camaro guys don't have to worry about that, but the mustang guys are always compared to the corvette, we need a "corvette" to take the heat and beat the tails off those chevy pieces of crap. :bigthumbsup

Forget the vette(aka POS), Ford should make their own version of Rossion Q1, it already uses a Ford powerplant and sell it for less than $100k.

2012 GT500 Super Snake is 800 HP vs the Z06 at 638 HP for half the cost. Yes the Z06 has better handling. But down a straight line I will bet on the GT500.

Are you guys smoking your socks or looking at old stats? :worship

We want a car that would beat it in EVERY category. Plus the Super Snake has traction issues already, and the SuperSnake is WAY over priced for what it is anyway... Really looking for an emotional icon that would solidify Ford's top spot among American automakers and some European automakers as well as provide a great smaller, lighter, faster car to compete in looks and pricing of a vette. I believe this would be a HUGE hit to Europe as well as US so forget about having a hard time selling it.

p.s.-Are you smoking your socks? The super snake is NO WHERE NEAR half the cost of a Z06... Come on dude:nono:

And somehow Honda is still up there will all of their problems, as is toyota and other **** brands. 833,000 cars recalled for airbags not going off... for the third time!

If you ask me, JD is a pile of lying ****. Notice how most of their "top quality" cars are foreign... :nono:

The JDP quality index I quoted is of new cars. Specifically, new car customers voluntarily mailing in surveys to JDP. JDP just tallies the results. As such it is a customer driven survey. I think foreign car mfgs do a better job after a new car sale than Ford does! Apparently a LOT of other people agree with me. Enough to knock Ford out of the top 20!

I wouldn't. I've raced a super snake in my lowly z06 and it wasn't even close. I've raced pulley'ed, headers, exhaust, etc gt500s. Not even close. They need a solid 200-300hp and tons of suspension/traction work to keep up.

I would like to see Ford make a corvette competitor. Competition is good for everyone. You can get a zr1 for under 105k, and you can grab z06s for mid 60s brand new. Used they are much lower than that. $88-95k for a low mileage zr1 and $38-45k for a pristine z06 make them bargains in my book.
