Why are Summit cams so cheap?

650 Views 7 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  samotrx7
Im wondering why they can sell their brand of cams for so much cheaper than any other name brand? Im assuming its because they do none of the design and just use profiles that are known to work. Only other thing I can think of is that they use an inferior alloy. Anyone know anything more about this?

Most cams are SADI core nowadays.
They're made by reputable manufacturers and renamed with the Summit brand. They're not inferior, they're just not "Comp Cams" or other big names, so they have a cheaper price.
I think you would be surprised to find out how many actually do their own design now days. And surprised how many cores that all the aftermarket companies use come from the same place.

Most cams are likely "designed" and built outside US at probably a single large supplier. Designed is used loosely here, they most likely do reverse engineering with an Adcole.

The markup has always been REALLY high on aftermarket parts. Summit just doesn't have the brand value so they have to compete on price.

Would really like an honest discussion about core sources and true quality for stuff like Cams, Springs, Cranks, Heads, etc.

I can tell you, you wouldn't be happy with what was said.

FYI, I used to truely design and build cams for NHRA, NASCAR, Comp, Edelbrock, GM, Harley, Hummer, you name it we built it.

The USA needs to get it's manufacturing base back.
It sickens me how much stuff is outsourced these days..
Epc rip

Looks like our thread died and no body fessed up to manfacturing outside the US or being the "uber" supplier for all the "big name" performance companies.

too bad.

EPC rest in peace.

Another factor (big one too) is that they're non roller cams, not rollers like 85-95 5.0 stangs use.
