I have found two turbo 2.3 engines, one in a 85 Merkur and one in an 84 Turbo coupe. I want to put one in my 90 lx mustang, wich would be the better choice, or does it matter.

How both engine do they look good by looking at them, do the run?
They are in a salvage yard,I dont know if they run or not.The merkur engine looks clean but the TC engine is pretty oily.I am going this saturday to take a closer look. This is my first mustang and first experience with turbos.

If the merkur engine looks clean, i'll go with that and a good rebuild. Good luck sat. when you go....
would there be any horsepower difference between the two? The turbos and intake plenums look different.

look for injector size, as some early turbo birds have 30# Injectors, and all xr4's have 35# injectors.

The Merkur motor is the best choice if you dont know how to determine the size of the injectors... but a clue is... Green top = 30#, brown top = 35#.

Look at the compressor size of the Turbo, if it is an early turbocoupe, they both have garrett T3's, XR4 may have a .60 A/R Turbo (usually a C3 Auto XR4 will have this turbo) the other T3 is a .48 A/R Turbo.

Now remember also if you plan on doing this swap... remember all turbocoupes and XR4's have "2" Fuel pumps and not just one... The Second pump is crucial to pevent the motor from running lean under boost.

Fuel delivery is crucial to a turbo application. Many years of playing with 2.3L turbo Cars and I do know a bit.
