im in the final stages of getting my 68 coupe with a 89 fox motor finally running and realized im not sure how to wire the fox body alternator to the factory wiring in the car every write up online shows how to wire in the 94-95 alternator which just isn't in the budget right now any help would be greatly appreciated (im running a painless wiring harness for the engine management)

I thought the Gen II has the same hookups as the Gen 1 alternator, main difference being that Gen II alternators produce more amps and are more efficient. I wish I had one of each side by side to compare because now you got me curious.

when i say 2g im refering to the fox body alternator which has a 3 wire connector on it with a built in voltage regulator where the mustang has an external voltage regulator and seperate terminals on the alternator

Ok I believe those are referred to as Gen 3, and I have one on my 69 F-100. Pulled it off a early 90's Taurus at the junkyard. I basically wired it to the solenoid as a "1 wire" setup and then completely removed all the original voltage regulator assembly from the 69.

Your 100% correct the taurus alternator is a gen 3 (same style as the 94-95 stangs) which is a easy setup im making life difficult my using a 2g setup (fox body 87-93) im hoping someone else out there has done the same :(, when you eliminated the volatage regulator to a 1 wire setup what did u do with the 4-5 wires coming into it im slightly lost to say the least

Well the Gen 3 only has 3 wires, 2 of them you wire together to feed the battery, the other one goes to a switched source, so that it knows when the key is in the "on" position.

I think my 66 Mustang has a Gen 2, I am not sure, but I think if you get a parts store replacement they give you a Gen 2. Again, not positive about this! But my replacement alternator has "60A" stamped on it and that seems like what a Gen 2 would put out, not a Gen 1, which I think would put out 45 amps. Man I wish you asked me this 5 years ago, it's like I knew more then but have forgotten so much. lol

I learned that the hard way too, now everything gets labeled and put into a plastic baggy.

The generation 2 like on a '90 lincoln or mustang, does need the external voltage regulator as it is not integral to the alt. The later one's have the internal VR. I'm running a 2 on my '66 and it must have the external VR. The 2 puts out plenty of juice for my 2 speed taurus fan and I also put in an AC. I also have the halogen upgrade head lights and it does the job quite well. I also think the 2's are 130 amps.

I believe you are referring to the 1G small case ('66-'73? 45A-65A ext. VR) and 1G large case ('76-'82? 70A-100A external VR). I installed a large case 1G from a mid '70 lincoln/mercury full size. I wanted to keep the original style wiring, VR and appearance and it fit with no mods other than an inch longer belt and it puts out 100A.

Here's a pic to help:
